someone is having waaaayy too much fun this week. one of our kiddo’s is home and i’m waiting on my shipment from nordstrom
those two things combined have put mr. style and i behind on our photos. but i didn’t think you would mind taking a look at another timeless classic – the mighty pencil skirt. similar here, here, and here paired with a closet workhorse – the humble denim shirt similar here, here, and here.
the first pencil skirt was designed by christian dior in 1954. the slim fitting skirt was a dramatic shift away from tight waists and full skirts which had dictated fashion runways for several years.
ever since the mid-fifties the pencil skirt has become a staple of work wardrobes with the hemline raising or lowering depending on the current trends.
pencil skirts look great with a cardigan or blazer. but can fly solo especially since many offices have relaxed the dress code. as you can see from today’s post they can easily be dressed down for a fun casual day.
snazzy prints that are eye catching are a nice change of pace. this skirt by j.crew has hung in my closet for about eight years or so. and i have to admit i love it just as much today as the day i purchased it. maybe because it’s pink and navy (a favorite color combo). or that i can add a pair of pink shoes similar here, here, and here into the mix.
whatever the reason, it’s good to have a classic pencil skirt on hand in solid colors and a fun print or pattern.

You can never go wrong with a denim shirt! One of my faves. Isn’t it wonderful when the grown ones come home? Fun times coming with that Nordstrom loot!

You look fab in a pencil skirt! I read the other day that everyone looks good in a pencil skirt, but I would disagree. Not every lady can wear them with panache. I remember when they hit the Midwest, probably a good long while after they actually came out. We called them “straight skirts”. After wearing the full skirts (with crinolines, no less) that our moms most likely made, the pencil skirts were a welcome change. Of course in those days, girls wore skirts or dresses to school and social events. I think the “A” line skirt made its debut in the ’60’s. I remember wearing a lot of those skirts with matching sweaters. Everything seems to come back around…just look at the bell bottom pants…oy vey… And who didn’t have a wrap around skirt or two in her closet? xoxo
