blogiversary | celebrating four years
there’s an anniversary to celebrate. no, not my wedding anniversary. that arrives in august. the anniversary i celebrate in march is my blogiversary. yup, four years ago almost to the day the first ootd was posted. here’s the first photo that was titled <step into spring>
let me tell you it’s been a wild ride ever since mr. style snapped the first photo. at the time, i knew nothing about blogging – zero, zilch, nada. some of you may be curious as to why i started a blog, in the first place. that’s a story i recently shared on a podcast interview with jennifer duvall the beauty blogger and makeup artist behind JennySue Makeup. if you have a moment to listen here’s the link.
recently, jennifer launched a podcast channel called Pretty Powerful. it was an honor to be one of her first interviews. let me tell you jennifer does a bang-up job asking questions and steering the conversation! and i love the fact jennifer is trying something new. something she wasn’t even sure she had the guts to do. but she took a leap of faith and i’m so happy she did. we all need to traverse those unknown waters from time-to-time. the show ends with jennifer and her guest sharing their favorite beauty products. i don’t know about you, but i’m always eager to learn about the latest and greatest in beauty and skincare.
but let’s take a jet tour from the inception of the blog. as i said, it’s been a wild ride these past four years. initially, the blog existed exclusively on the social media channel tumblr – a user-friendly space. think of tumblr as the predessor to instagram but with more photos. the only skill necessary was uploading a photo and hitting publish. easy enough for this less than tech-savvy girl. and that’s just what i did, consistently, five days a week. three months into my new venture, i received a text message at work from mr. style, asking, “have you paid attention to your tumblr account today?” back then, i rarely checked my social channel. all of my attention was focused on coordinating a daily outfit, squeezing in a photo session then heading off to work. after my husband’s message, i grabbed my phone and logged into tumblr. this email greeted me. 
wow! my blog was splashed on the front page of tumblr smack dab in between ellen degeneres and nbc nightly news. this was the photo that launched my account into unchartered territory. thanks, tumblr!
when i returned home that evening two of my kiddos were camped out on our sofa glued to the computer monitor, spewing advice, and scratching their heads as to how the momster’s blog had suddenly gone viral. but all i could think about was what to wear the following day? suddenly, i had a captive audience that was growing by the second. and i discovered to my dismay i had absolutely nothing to wear… i finally decided on my go-to outfit. can you guess what i chose? that’s right, a blazer, blue jeans, and a sweater.
after my tumblr blog went viral, i decided to take things seriously with social media. and i knew i needed to set up a proper blog on wordpress. but the idea of transitioning to the main blogosphere struck fear in my heart. there were many technical aspects on the back end of the blog i didn’t understand and was hesitant to learn (can you really teach an old dog new tricks?). i finally made the decision to set up shop in cyberspace after the lovely deb boland from Fabulous after 40 contacted me for a style blazer interview. thanks, deb! it was just the sort of nudge i needed. now there was a deadline involved. if i didn’t meet that deadline, i wouldn’t meet all the lovely readers that didn’t have a tumblr account. initially, panic set in as i didn’t know the difference between a link and a plug-in let alone how to operate either one… a big thank you to all who faithfully stuck by me as i navigated one learning curve after another in those early days.
but mr. style was a fantastic photographer from the get-go.
and we started our weekly gig with oscar, watching him grow from adorable puppy to full-grown canine.
there have been some amazing hairstyles along the way. and hair stylists that kept me looking at the top of my game.
over the past four years, there’s been more than one fun adventure. early 2016 Chico’s flew me to california to participate in their first campaign that celebrated fifty-somethings.
shortly after, i hopped on a plan and flew to minneapolis to take part in several photo shoots with Christopher and Banks. it was beyond fun!
i’ve had the privilege to work with some amazing bloggers. ty, naty michele and i worked on the “beautiful eyes confident style” campaign with alcon. the photo shoot took place in chicago.

i’ve shared fitness tips with you. Faster Way to Fat Loss really works! and it keeps me on track especially after the holidays when i need a reboot.
this is me january 2018! boy oh boy did i need help.
but slowly, over time, i’ve gotten this sixty-something bod back into shape. the key is what you eat – 80% kitchen 20% exercise. but exercise is soooo important as we age. use it or lose it.
recently, i added a classic style series (after all, i’m a classic style blogger) on instagram.
there’s a burgeoning book club with Style. read all about it here. and in the past month, i’ve added HSN style expert to my resume.
but day-after-day, week-after-week, year-after-year i share my daily outfits with all of my amazing readers. and guess what? you, my dear readers, are the most crucial component of my blog! you are the ones who faithfully stop by instagram, the blog, facebook, youtube or twitter. you are the ones who make the difference in my life. so thank you for every comment, every like, every email (although i do get woefully behind in my answers at times)!

I love to watch your style and you know I’m a huge fan of your hair. You’ve made me step out in my personal wardrobe to wear things I love even at my heaviest. Your makeup challenges me to put on brighter tones. While a professional, I tend to lean toward dark and by that I mean black for work, when at play I love my younger brighter look. I didn’t find you when you first started, but I haven’t stopped checking in since I discovered your blog. One of the things I love is that you are not afraid of color. As we age so many articles and bloggers recommend sticking to neutrals, beige, black, and maybe navy. You on the other hand shown women, (I’m 64) that we can rock beautiful colors and still look fabulous! Thanks for that, and keep doing what you’re doing I Love It!!

I always made a point to open your blog to keep me motivated to put my best face and outfit forward whether I was going to chemo, seeing a doctor or going into my office. I love clothes and fashion. I wasn’t going to let anything get in the way of looking my best even with my wig. Co workers couldn’t believe how I was plowing through treatments and your inspiration helped me many times to pull an outfit together.

Wow, you have helped me do much. I’m 66 and I try to stay current in every way-hair, clothes, classics and a few trends. Exercise is very important to me. I try to get to the gym 3x per week. However, I stretch and do other routines daily. Thank you for all that you do for “women if a Certain Age.”

You have taken the overwhelming and challenging aspect of -what to wear as we age – and provided hints and tips that make sense without costing a fortune. A classic blazer, graphic tee, jeans and the right shoes and I am ready to head out the door and go anywhere. As a real estate agent I may be meeting someone to view land in the morning and meeting with an attorney at closing in the afternoon. Your tips give me ideas to use when I look in my closet every morning. My days are challenging because of the vastly different types of appointments I have and your tips help me look both approachable and professional. Thanks so much! Beth, I don”t know how long I’ve been following you, but I do remember some of your first pictures that popped up on Pinterest! Who was this stylish woman and could I copy her look?! The hair, the outfit, and confidence inspired me to look at other “over 50” postings. It was so nice to find women my age being stylish and polished. I could quit looking at 30 year olds and look at beautifully styled grown women!! Thank you for taking that leap 4 years ago and congratulations on the great success! Had to chuckle at your sons reaction to mom navigating the ins and outs of the internet as a rising, viral star! I’m sure there’s a part of that story that just doesn’t “compute” in their heads! My adult kids would feel the same way about me and my computer skills, and yet my mother and in-laws consider me a “genius” and call me for tech support! Thank you again and I can’t wait to see where you take us next!
i am in my 70’s , and have always dressed “classic, but conservative.” You have inspired me to “jump out of my box.” I recently lost weight due to an illness, and my reward to myself was to purchase new classic but colorful outfits. I now find myself putting colors together I never did before. I feel so good about my new style, thanks to you! What a boost to my self-esteem. Dear Beth – Your blog has definitely upped my fashion game. For a number of years now I have felt the years have taken away the joy of fashion I once had. As my body has been changing with age, I found I was not looking at models my age for tips on what to wear to be stylish with proper fit to my aging body. I love your ideas and pictures. I can’t begin to tell you what you & your blog have meant to me…you have become such a “friend” to me…I feel like we’ve known each other for years!! You have such a way with style & words!! I look forward to reading your blog every day (just after I finish my devotion, of course!) I had totally forgotten about myself and was a schlump in “hospital clothes” during my husbands acute onset sickness at age 49, that lasted 7 1/2 years before he was on hospice and passed away! My goal every day during that time was to keep him alive & comfortable while trying to keep a roof over our heads! You don’t know it but you gave me support getting my game back on!

I have started my own OOTD and take a picture in the mirror each morning since I live alone. It has really helped me up my game in dressing for work since I now have a picture as evidence of how I looked!
You certainly are a sharp business woman. Your blog, and your style has grown by leaps and bounds. I’m a loyal reader, but my shape is different from your gorgeous curves, so my style has to accommodate that.
