There is a good range of lip trends right now that are both bold and versatile, which allows you to take your pick and see what best suits your style.
From timeless classics to contemporary takes on nostalgic lip trends, here are SIX LIP LOOKS you can play with this fall to elevate your autumn makeup game. And if you own as many lip products as I do, go ahead and grab yourself a lipstick organizer case to easily see and store them all!
One lip trend that never goes out of style for fall is the rich and sultry brick red. This deep, earthy hue is reminiscent of autumn leaves and exudes confidence and sophistication. One formula that has been around for years, is the MAC “Chili” matte formula lipstick, $23.
It’s one I rarely wear in spring or summer, but feels special and perfect when I pull it out for fall and winter! It’s matte, but not overly drying, yet has good staying power. I don’t even need a lip liner with it. Just make sure to choose a matte or satin finish for brick red lips to keep them looking sophisticated - glossy doesn’t usually translate with this shade IMO.
Fall 2023 is all about embracing the dark side—with dark glosses, that is! Glossy lips are making a strong comeback this season but with a twist. Opt for deep, moody shades like plum, burgundy, or my personal favorite, Clinique Black Honey Creamy Pop Plush Lip Gloss, $22, for an edgy yet glamorous look.
If you still don’t own this classic shade created back in the 1970’s by Clinique, now is the time to get yourself one! If you want the color without the glossy finish, remember the original in the Almost Lipstick formula, $24, (more of a hydrating balm lipstick finish) is a fabulous option.
Why try it? Very dark shades in matte finishes typically make lips look smaller. But when you switch to a high shine finish, the light reflecting gives more of a full lip illusion with a touch of mystique!
Time out for my cheek look duo that seems to work nicely with all 6 of these lip looks! I combined the super popular Soft Pinch liquid blush, $23 by Rare Beauty in shade “Bliss”, $23 (matte nude pink) with a touch of the gorgeous Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Wand Highlighter in “Pillow Talk Medium”, $42, (has a bit of copper to it) on the highest point of my cheeks. The key with any liquid blush and highlighter, is to have this Soft Pinch blush brush to make sure it looks airbrushed on.
If you're looking for a lip trend that combines modern aesthetics with fall vibes, metallic mauve is the way to go. This muted, dusty mauve shade with a metallic finish gives your lips an ethereal, otherworldly glow. I can’t get enough of the shade “Patina Shimmer” in the Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick, $24.
It's a perfect choice for daytime and nighttime looks alike. And if long-wear lip formulas are a big deal to you - this is one of the best. Just make sure that you apply it onto smooth, hydrated, and exfoliated lips (flaky lips won’t hold color) and that you let it sit on the lips for one minute until dried down. * I have to use my fave cleansing balm to get it off it’s that long-wearing *
Clothing-wise, pair this lip (and the rest of them!) with a light chambray button-up and with an animal print cardigan that will be wardrobe staples for the remainder of the season. I can’t believe how often I wear both of mine!
The '90s have been back in a big way ever since spring 2023, and this includes makeup trends. This fall, channel your inner '90s supermodel with matte brown or nude lips. A well-defined lip liner is key to achieving that iconic '90s pout.
If you’ve been reading any of my posts, you probably know what my go-to lipliners are - the Buxom Power Line liners with the lip brush on the end that helps with shading and blurring your line so it doesn’t stay too harsh.
I used shade “Savvy Sienna” for this look and paired it with Buxom’s newest lipstick formula Full On Satin lipstick in shade “Skin Tease,“ $25. The key to nailing this look is to make the liner a bit more noticeable than usual.
So needless to say, this trend is definitely for the gal that loves to embrace trends and is unapologetic about revisiting the '90s era!
For those who just can’t get behind the a dark or moody lip, a neutral gloss is always a refreshing choice. A warm gloss evokes the coziness of a “Pumpkin Pie Latte”, $25 which is actually this plumping gloss’s name! It’s a golden brown cream shade that feels like an autumn sunset and provides the warmest tingle that evokes that plumping feeling.
If you are going to go more nude and neutral with no lip liner, then choose a high gloss to let the color shine and provide dimension. If you want a great drugstore gloss that gives high shine without the high price tag, you have to try a Maybelline Lifter Gloss, $9, in shade “crystal” for that warm brown shimmer vibe - they are the best.
Berry lips have long been a fall favorite, and this season, they want lots of attention. Opt for a Cranberry shade with a matte finish to create a juicy and succulent look. The specific lip color to try is "Cranberry Smash”, $24, from the limited edition Keep It Spicy collection from Buxom. This candy apple red with ruby undertones is a fabulous option if you’re bored with red lips. Pair it with a warm, neutral eyeshadow look to keep the focus on your lips.
