So what is a monochromatic makeup look exactly? It’s basically where you use the same color palette, or slight variations of one color, for your eyes, lips, AND cheeks. This is a style of makeup that enhances your features without feeling overwhelming and looks very sophisticated.
In today’s post, I will guide you through the simple steps of creating a stunning monochromatic makeup look.
Creating a flawless base is crucial for any makeup look. I like to start with a hydrating moisturizer with SPF that gives my skin a nourished feel that glows. If you haven’t checked out the L’Oreal Revitalift Broad Spectrum Beauty Fluid, $25, you should! The reviews on this skincare product + SPF are incredible.
Then I choose a lightweight foundation or a tinted moisturizer to even out the skin without looking too heavy.
I rely on the L’Oreal True Match Nude Hyaluronic Tinted Serum, $15, for this type of look. This is also what I wear to the gym to work out because it looks just like skin, but better, and without the heaviness! If you haven’t tried this breakthrough product you need to. I’m wearing shade 4-5 in this post.
I apply this in a thin layer, focusing on areas that require more coverage, such as redness or uneven pigmentation. I apply this product with a buffing foundation brush, but your fingers can work just as well since it is considered a skin serum.
The key to a monochromatic look is using shades from the same color family on your eyes, cheeks, and lips. Select a hue that complements your skin tone and eye color. Earthy tones like soft pinks, mauves, browns, or even peaches are often flattering on mature skin. I chose a soft rosy-pink palette for this post.
For this monochromatic eye look, I used the Urban Decay Naked 3 Mini palette, $33 which is a perfect blend of 6 rosy-toned shades anyone can wear.
I started with the shimmery rose golds from lash to crease, then picked up one of the slightly darker matte shades in the same color family and applied it to my crease to add depth and dimension.
I finished the look off with a soft bronze eyeliner by NYX Cosmetics to compliment and define the eyes just along the upper lashline only.
Adding a touch of color to your cheeks can instantly brighten your complexion. You’ll want to opt for a blush shade that matches your chosen monochromatic color. If you’ve heard me talk about blush, you’ve most likely heard me confess my love for the Buxom Cosmetics Wanderlust Primer Infused Blushes, $23.
They are some of my favorite formulas of powder blush that go on silky smooth and have the faintest amount of shimmer in them so that you can forgo highlighter if you want! And of course, you cannot go wrong with the rosy mauve “Dolly” shade that they are best known for I’m wearing in this post. And if you need a new awesome blush brush, this Morphe precision brush, $18, is amazing!
For mature lips, it's best to choose a lip formula that is hydrating and creamy, as dryness can accentuate fine lines. Select a lip shade that complements your monochromatic color scheme. Soft pinks, mauves, or warm neutrals are always excellent choices.
If your lips have lost definition over time, consider using a lip liner in a similar shade to give them a more defined shape which I did here. My chosen combination was from Buxom - two of their newest shades, both with a plumping feature! I lined with the Power Liner in “Smooth Spice,” $21, and topped it off with their Plumping Lip Cream in “Negroni,” $25. I am honestly in love with this very wearable lip combination.
To complete this rosy makeup look, I lightly dusted my new magical pink setting powder to set my concealer and brighten my complexion.
By harmonizing your eyes, cheeks, and lips with a color palette that suits your skin tone, you can enhance your features and radiate confidence. Now I gotta know - are you going to try this for yourself??

In the past few years I have become allergic to most powder eye shadows. The only one that I’m good with so far is Jones Road but it really limits my choices. Do you know of any others?
Have you tried powder palettes from Burt’s Bees and Pacifica Beauty and Mineral Fusion? Those are 3 brands known for being great for sensitive eyes. But other cream shadow options I’d suggest would be Laura Mercier Caviar sticks, Colourpop stix, and Elf shadow sticks
