houndstooth is a pattern coined since it resembles a dog’s tooth. it was originally worn as an outer garment by shepherds in the lowlands of Scotland. in the 1940s, Christian Dior began to use this pattern in his collections, and it sprung into prominence. houndstooth is a timeless pattern most often seen in black and white but can be adapted in other color combinations. if you pay attention to SEC football and are familiar with The Crimson Tide, you know their love of houndstooth runs deep. revered coach paul “bear” bryant was always seen sporting a black and white houndstooth fedora, and a tradition was born.
since houndstooth is a classic, timeless pattern, you can readily find coats, blazers, and sweaters in this iconic print. my love for black and white runs deep, as does my affection for houndstooth. one of my early blog posts featured a gorgeous houndstooth blazer, white shirt, and black pencil skirt – houndstooth and pencil skirts – which i later wore with faux leather trousers – hare and hart. another post sported a houndstooth sweater popped over a black dress – boots, and bits. and i’ve even been known to wear a houndstooth skirt – what to wear to work talbots anniversary collection or houndstooth jeans – how to dress preppy in the winter – and i definitely have a houndstooth scarf (or two) that i love to throw over my winter coat – baby it’s cold outside. didn’t i warn tell you i love houndstooth?
today, i updated my houndstooth blazer from Neiman Marcus with a longer length (Ann Taylor offers a nice alternative houndstooth blazer); the blazer is double-breasted, which looks chic buttoned or unbuttoned. since i’m going for a sporty look, faded black denim from Madewell was a perfect choice. a black cashmere crewneck from Everlane will keep me warm and cozy but keeps the outfit grounded in simplicity. i love to wear heels with denim to add extra oomph, in this case, silver metallic pumps. metallic shoes act as a neutral but are especially festive this time of year. if heels are not your thing, there are many heel heights to choose from, including flats. several options are linked below.

Merry Christmas Beth!
thanks, judy! merry christmas and have a happy new year.
I love houndstooth, too! You look great in that.
such a classic and timeless pattern. merry Christmas!
So chic! Love outfit!
i am eternally in love with houndstooth! merry christmas.
Love the silver shoes with the black /white and houndstooth. Instead of the pop of color, a pop of metallic.
i am a big fan of metallic shoes. they go with everything! merry christmas.
This silver shoes – what an unexpected twist! The brilliance of that pairing is amazing…I will be looking for some kitten heel silver pumps…(unfortunately my feet complain too much with higher heels ๐ )
thank goodness there’s a heel height for every foot! merry christmas.
I love this outfit. I plan to copy it right now to the silver shoes. Thanks for always giving us great clothing ideas. Happy, Happy Holidays!!!!
and a very merry christmas and happy new year!
Great look the high heels are not for me but you look great. I LOVE the little pocket book! I would also be able to afford it. Thanks for your postings. Pats to puppy.
merry christmas!
Tres chic๐ I have a short version of that, and wanted to modernize it- perfection!
I took your suggestion of ordering extra pairs of fav jeans. Just got 3 pairs of Chaps stretch denim in black slim leg like yours here.
I also to your advice about Ruby Woo – it came last night – in love. Bright but chic, and with this outfit – Paris perfection.
With it, I received a Pat MaGrath lip trio sampler. Check out Flesh 5 lipstick. It goes on my similar colouring, as a warm brown red. I use a brush for a more sophisticated look – not overwhelming. It is creamy, stays put and although matte, is not the least bit dead looking. More like a satin to me. I prefer my go to liner, Slow Burn, by Marc Jacobs, which is creamy, but once set, stays all day. Flesh 5 would look Devine on you with the caramel suede coat, black ensemble . ๐
i am definitely going to try that lipstick, andrea! thanks for the suggestion.
A BIG NO to bare feet in shoes……Winter where I live and need BOOTS!
you do need boots in Canada with all that snow and freezing cold. i am one lucky girl to have a high of 63 today. gotta love winter
in the south. stay warm!
Hello Beth – I am so pleased I found your site. I love the way you dress. I have been ill for some time. Part of my recovery plan is to update my wardrobe and style. Thank you for all the inspiration. I am going to give high heels with trousers/jeans a try. Do you wear tights/sock with them or bare feet?
welcome, barbara! so happy you found the blog. yes, i do wear socks/tights when it gets chilly. but i’m fortunate to live in a mild
climate where i can get away with no socks most days. all the best in your recovery. take it one day at a time. Merry Christmas!
I absolutely LOVE this look! And…your hair is totally ON POINT! Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas, Lisa! this is definitely a go-to outfit. glad you liked it too.
Hey Style at a Certain Age. I love your blog and yes your Style! I check your site every week. I’m 61 and have let my hair find its way back to a natural grey colour:) I wanted to comment today because I like the combination of shiny silver, casual jeans and a jazzy yet traditional blazer; it all works. I would like to suggest that a crisper pair of darker black fitted jeans may have been a better pairing in this ensemble. I kept getting the feeling the more casual faded pair in the photo shoot were just a little too “lived in”.
of course! style is always about personal preference and it’s so nice to style outfits multiple ways with just a tweak or two.
