what to wear to book club
once a month like clockwork a lovely group of women in athens gathers together to read and discuss a book. the books are typically fiction, but no story is off limits, including non-fiction. in fact, we kicked off our book club last year reading The Soul of America by Jon Meacham. one of my kiddos joked, “do you really talk about the books or just sit around and drink wine?” well, wine is definitely at the ready, snacks too, and while the conversation weaves and bobs between an assortment of topics the monthly book selection is always discussed. but i did hear about weighted blankets for the first time last night, and my curiosity is piqued. supposedly they help with less stress and improved sleep.
this month’s book selection was Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine by Gail Honeyman. this is what Reese Witherspoon had to say: “Beautifully written and incredibly funny, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is about the importance of friendship and human connection. I fell in love with Eleanor, an eccentric and regimented loner whose life beautifully unfolds after a chance encounter with a stranger; I think you will fall in love, too!”
several of us had a hard time getting into the book. and i had heard the same sort of reaction on several online book clubs. but there are four of us who listen to audible books in the car, scrubbing dishes, or on a morning walk and decided the narrator was so entertaining that we didn’t suffer through the first third of the book like so many others. but the unanimous consensus from my local book club was this is a story that needs to be read. two thumbs up from me.
if you are interested, i started a fledgling online book club called book club with Style. it’s in the early stages, but i have two lovely co-hosts, published authors Hank Phillippi Ryan and Kerstin March, that lead an online video discussion each month. if by chance you tried to join in the past we already faced a technical glitch with Facebook and had to migrate the group. but things appear to be working, and it’s full steam ahead for 2019. tonight 1.16.19 at 7pm EST we will discuss Song of a Captive Bird by Jasmin Darznik.
but back to my local book club as this is what i wore last night. many times i exchange my beloved blue jeans for a pair of chinos when i want an alternative casual chic look. this particular pair from J.Crew has polka dots, so i was immediately smitten. chinos look great with tennis shoes, but i chose leopard flats that are back in stock at Ann Taylor. it was a chilly day so a cashmere turtleneck was a no-brainer and i popped on a puffer vest from J.Crew Factory last seen here for an extra layer of warmth.

this turtleneck has a waffle weave which is a nice detail that sets it apart from a typical cashmere sweater. plus it has a boxy oversized fit with side slits.
