Who doesn’t love a casual chic outfit that’s cozy and cute, especially when the temps are chilly? Denim on denim, or the Canadian Tuxedo, is going strong and is a fashion statement all on its own. Legend has it that back in 1951, after a long hunting trip, singer-actor Bing Crosby checked in at the Vancouver Hotel but was denied entry due to his double denim attire. The mishap was corrected after a bellhop recognized the famous crooner, but his outfit was coined The Canadian Tuxedo, and it’s stuck ever since.

Denim Styles for 2024
There are a variety of denim silhouettes that are trending in 2024 (although skinny jeans aren’t one of them), and I’m loving straight-leg jeans for many reasons. First, this silhouette looks good on every body shape as it skims your frame with a straight up-and-down cut through the entire pant leg, from waist to hem. Second, straight jeans have a comfortable fit with a timeless appeal that is easy to dress up or down and ready to wear anywhere and everywhere.

There are many rinses to choose from when it comes to denim, but a light rinse is on trend in 2024 and the perfect choice for spring/summer outfits. It’s still winter, although Ground Hog Day is fast approaching with Punxsutawney Phil's yearly prediction. Six more weeks of cold weather? Or an early Spring? Phil is right about 40% of the time.

Today, I decided a light rinse straight-leg jeans was the perfect match to a chambray shirt. This cable knit cardigan from J.Crew was an early fall purchase and has been on style repeat all fall and winter. It will continue to be the perfect third layer as we head into spring. A turn-lock skinny belt that’s a dupe for the famous Hermés Kelly belt adds polish to this casual outfit, and I chose gold metallic flats (old, similar here) to tie back to the gold buttons on the cardigan and gold buckle on the belt.

Style Tip: Style your straight-leg jeans with shoes that flatter the untapered pant leg. High-top sneakers or retro sneakers are great casual options. Loafers (I prefer mine without socks) give your outfit a preppy/collegiate look. Pointed-toe black leather or brown suede ankle booties will give your ensemble a chic, edgy look. And ballet flats always look fantastic with straight-leg jeans.
