all is calm, all is bright, as we head into the Christmas countdown. most of my packages have arrived, the wrapping has begun, and it’s onto the menu for Christmas Eve and Christmas brunch. so i’m keeping it simple with an old school look that never fails. yep, i’m keeping the prep in my step after all these years.
what is a preppy aesthetic? it’s sporty, it’s relaxed, loaded with striped oxford shirts, crewneck sweaters, pearls, and more pearls. it’s a style that evolved from ivy league prep school uniforms into a relaxed classic American style. if you want a grown-up version of preppy style, stick to neutrals. a preppy aesthetic is smart casual, off-duty clothing at its best. vintage shots of prepsters from any era still don’t look out of place. my favorite prepster, a.k.a sloan ranger, was Princess Diana. many of her outfits are making a reappearance. anyone remember her iconic black sheep sweater? it’s available to pre-order from Rowing Blazers.
a puffer vest is a perfect way to add the prepster aesthetic to today’s outfit. and, yes, neutrals are in play again. camel and black is a color combo that never gets tired. the quilted vest is old (similar here) from J.McLaughlin, a brand that is preppy through and through. black denim from Everlane is paired with a camel cashmere crewneck. a simple white shirt from Talbots is thrown in for a crisp contrast. since Georgia has a milder winter climate than most, i opted for leopard flats (old, similar here) to add interest and texture. but a pair of booties would look smart or just add socks. how’s that for an easy peasy preppy outfit?

Hi Beth
I love the look of this preppy, fresh outfit. The color combos are great. I have noticed you tug on your earlobe ala Carol Burnett in some of your photos. Is it a hello or tribute to someone special? Happy Holiday season to you and your family. We make an identical egg casserole in Iowa that was my mother in law’s recipe that we love! It is hearty and tasty! Your holiday preparations are fun to read and get ideas. Thank you for all of the fresh ideas for those of us of a certain age, especially during this pandemic. I look forward to your blog each day.
Love Preppy looks too! I’m known for cable crew necks and button down shirts with an occasion boho day thrown in. Talbots and Anthropologie are my go to stores (Marshall’s too!)
You look very ME today! (Except I’m not gorgeous). Lol.
I love a good preppy look. I wear something similar but always a white shirt. I never thought to wear my denim under the sweater. You inspire! Have a blessed and safe Christmas.
I love your look. You always look classy and put together.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
