Look Expensive on a Budget: 7 Casual PiecesThat Elevate Your Style

If there’s one style mantra I return to again and again, it’s this: looking polished doesn’t have to mean overdone. In fact, some of the most elegant outfits are the simplest—the kind that rely on elevated basics, neutral palettes, and impeccable fit. Whether you’re running errands or meeting a friend for lunch, these 7 casual pieces will help you look expensive on a budget with minimal effort. Because style isn’t just what you wear—it’s how you wear it. You might already own these pieces, but it’s all about how you style them. Because here’s the thing—looking expensive isn’t about wearing designer head-to-toe. Or spending a gazillion dollars on your wardrobe. It’s about looking intentional, polished, and elevated.

Yes, you can absolutely look expensive without breaking the bank. It all comes down to smart wardrobe choices and intentional styling. Today I’m sharing 7 casual pieces that do just that: they make you look put-together and luxe, effortlessly. If you want to master the art of effortless elegance, here’s the secret: it’s not about chasing every trend. It’s about choosing the right pieces—the kind that whisper luxury without saying a word.

The Knit Collar Polo

Let’s start with one of my favorite updates to a classic: the knit polo. It offers structure with a relaxed edge—more polished than a tee, but softer than a button-down. Whether you choose short or long sleeves, this piece pairs beautifully with everything from trousers to skirts.

Style tip: Stick to soft neutrals like ivory, navy, or heather gray for that timeless appeal.

Matching Sets

There’s something undeniably chic about a matching set, whether linen or knit. It’s cozy, coordinated, and quietly luxurious. A sweater and trouser combo in matching tones defines casual elegance. But don’t be afraid to step outside the box and try a bold pattern that screams Palm Beach. It’s easy to look expensive on a budget with a matching set.

Navy Linen Top | Navy Linen Pants | Black Thongs | Hoop Earrings | Initial Necklace

Anset Knit Jacket | Wide Leg Pants | Suede Espadrilles | Lasson Belt Bag

Style tip: Choose ribbed or fine-gauge knits in a creamy beige, taupe, or navy for a clean, upscale look.

Look Expensive on a Budget with The Shirt Dress

A shirt dress is a year-round staple that can be dressed up or down with ease. Cinch the waist with a belt, layer it with a denim jacket, or wear it loose and unbuttoned over trousers for a fresh twist.

Neutral-Toned Trousers

Don’t underestimate the power of a well-fitting trouser in a soft, neutral hue. Think ivory, sand, stone, or camel. They elevate even the simplest top and serve as the perfect foundation for a polished look.

A Structured Handbag

Nothing pulls together an outfit quite like a structured handbag. You don’t need a logo or label to make a statement—just clean lines, quality materials, and a timeless shape.

Denim Tote | Leather Top Handle Handbag

Embroidered Ruffle Blouse | Straight Leg Denim | Wavy Straw Belt | Bamboo Handle Leather Tote | Acrylic Sandals

Style tip: Keep it tidy. An organized, well-kept bag always looks more sophisticated than one that’s seen better days.

Loafers, Sneakers, Leather Slides or Mules

Shoes ground an outfit—literally and stylistically. A classic loafer or crisp white sneaker adds an effortless edge that’s perfect for women on the go who still want to look polished. I love flip-flops but let’s leave them for pool day. A leather slide or mule instantly refines a casual outfit. They’re the secret to looking chic from the ground up.

Minimal, modern, and incredibly versatile, these shoes strike the perfect balance between comfort and sophistication. The sleek silhouette, clean lines, and rich leather texture give off that quiet luxury vibe—no logos needed.

Pair them with denim, dresses, or tailored trousers—they effortlessly pull an outfit together without trying too hard. Whether you’re headed to brunch, running errands, or just stepping out in style, leather slides and mules say understated elegance every time.

Luxe-Looking Sunglasses

The easiest way to look expensive? Sunglasses.

One of my best tips? Invest in sunglasses that aren’t branded within an inch of their life. Clean, simple frames—black, tortoiseshell, maybe a cat-eye—instantly elevate a look. And never fails to elevate a look—no matter your budget. A great pair of sunglasses adds instant polish, confidence, and mystery. It’s that “off-duty model” meets “Old Hollywood glamour” effect, and the best part? You don’t need to spend a fortune to get it right.

Whether running errands or heading to brunch, the right pair of shades can pull your whole outfit together. I’ll show you how to choose flattering frames, what shapes feel modern and timeless, and why sunglasses are the unsung hero of an elevated wardrobe. I invest in my sunglasses and pick out a new style every year. My favorites are black Celine sunglasses and tortoise shell Prada sunglasses, but it’s easy to pick up dupes at a fraction of the price.

Style Tip:
The right pair of sunglasses can instantly elevate your outfit and your attitude. Oversized frames add glamour, while classic shapes like aviators or cat-eyes bring timeless polish. Stick to neutral frames—black, tortoise, or nude—for maximum versatility. And remember: sunglasses aren’t just for sun protection, they’re your secret weapon for effortless cool (and a little mystery never hurts).

Closing Thoughts

Style at a certain age is about knowing what works and confidently leaning into it. You don’t need an overflowing closet—you need the right pieces that reflect your personal style and stand the test of time.

With just a few thoughtful additions, your casual wardrobe can exude sophistication and ease and look expensive on a budget. After all, looking good isn’t about how much you spend—it’s about how confidently you carry yourself. And don’t miss these posts: What to Ditch after 50 or Create a Relaxing Reading Nook

Where did you get the blue and white shirt dress you wore with jeans and the one with the belt? I enjoy your fashion ideas and clothing combinations! Keep up the great work!

    1. Hi Kathy,

That linen shirtdress is the Rory from Frank & Eileen. I believe the light blue stripe is no longer in stock, but there are other colors available.

      Hope this helps!

Even though I’m not a huge fan of blue jeans like you, I wear a lot of white jeans combinations. Any colour looks good with white jeans : beige, navy, aqua, light blue, pink, lilac, even orange, whether it’s blazers, cardigans, t-shirts, linen tops, etc.! Love all your sandals, especially the mules and espadrilles. Keep inspiring us Beth!
