how to wear a skirt

it’s Thursday, which means another trip to the archives.  we’ve been doing that regularly over here on the blog:  last week, we talked about how to wear shorts, and the week before was how to wear wide leg pants.  it’s May now—the transition month from spring to summer.  depending on the day and the weather, that means that there are a lot of fashion options.  so today, we’re gonna talk how to wear a skirt.  i’ve got three skirts and three outfit ideas that’ll work throughout the month.  enjoy!

white denim skirt

today, i chose a classic color combo โ€“ the mighty black and white thatโ€™s always right any time of year. but i think it looks particularly crisp and clean for summer. and thereโ€™s nothing quite like a crisp cotton shirt. if you ever wonder how to jazz up a white shirt blazers and cardigans add that little extra something. but today i reached for a knit shell to add pizazz to an otherwise ho-hum outfit. knit shells are a closet staple that looks great tucked underneath blazers. but they can shine on their own when worn as a vest. who doesnโ€™t want versatility when it comes to their wardrobe?

patterned skirt

if itโ€™s summer then itโ€™s time to bring out the bold patterns like a lemon print skirt. summer style is always about casual ease. those long summer days demand it. itโ€™s time to kick back and relax at a pool party, beach getaway, or al fresco dining. donโ€™t you just love a warm summer breeze?

besides a cute summer skirt, another summer favorite is a crisp white blouse. many of you know iโ€™m always on the hunt for the perfect one. while this cotton eyelet shirt might not be โ€œthe oneโ€ it had to come home with me nonetheless. donโ€™t you just love the contrast between a feminine fabric with a menswear-inspired button-down? itโ€™s the ying and yang of style. one of my favorite style tricks is to add a masculine item to a feminine look. it keeps the outfit balanced.

a-line skirt

if itโ€™s monday then we should be singing the blues. unless youโ€™re wearing black. like todayโ€™s ootd which features a simple black and white striped tee, a-line skirt and the cutest pair of pointy-toed flats iโ€™ve seen in a good long while. every season i develop a style crush with a pair of shoes. be warned! these slingbacks will be on style repeat all summer long.

Love reading your blog everyday and hate to be negative, but, misspellings drive me crazy. In your first paragraph – week was spelled weak – crazy thing to worry about in these times but it still bothers me.

    1. great catch! good thing, these are fixable mistakes.

  2. All skirts are cute…you wear clothes so well! But, my favorite is the navy with a little flair. Adorable!
I rarely wear skirts anymore but after seeing your longer white denim skirt with front split from a few weeks ago….just loved it! Loved the striped tee too.

    Hi Beth,

Your blog is one of my favorites. Love your preppy style, and your selections are always on target. Iโ€™m petiteโ€”5 feet 102 lbs. Would it be possible for you to show one example every now and then adapting the style youโ€™re showing to someone my height? Kelly seems pretty petite-maybe she could model? Just a suggestion. I will continue to love your postings regardless.

    Hi Beth,
Love the skirts! I’m still waiting for my red gingham one to ship from Talbots. I’ve lost some weight yea , but the downside is most of my pants don’t fit right and I can’t try new ones on. Skirts are more forgiving of weight fluctuations and I think I look better in them anyway I usually wear pantyhose to give my pale legs some color and hide scars and discolorations Your legs look great and tanned and it doesn’t look like you are wearing stockings envious!

You look very cute in each of these skirts. I wish I could pull this off. I am long waisted and short legged. I donโ€™t think I would look as good.

  6. That you for your blog, love the skirt idea. Plan on buying a good white denim skirt.
Bought a scalloped edge skort last year at Talbot, I really enjoyed wearing in the hot summer. Have a very Happy Motherโ€™s Day with your kiddos!

Because of my pear body shape I need plenty of room in the hips and waist. Would these skirts work? I really like the โ€œlook.โ€

  8. Love skirts and dresses in spring and summer. In spring itโ€™s a welcome change and in summer there is nothing cooler in hot weather. I think they make us look alive. In my mind there is nothing more feminine than the gentle sway of hemlines when we walk or with the aid of a gentle breeze. Iโ€™m a romantic at heart and I will never be too old for a sundress, albeit with wider straps.๐Ÿ‘—

Hi Beth: First let me say I enjoy your posts immensely. I want to express my opinion on your hair; I like it better with short layers. I feel like I can say this because my hair is white/grey like yours and I too have been letting my layers grow out into a bob and have realized by looking at yours that our hair looks better with shorter layers. It shows the color better and the bob actually makes us look frumpy/older. I have an appointment next week and am going back to shorter layers. I know that your hair is not my business but since we are about the same age I felt like I could be honest and say what I think knowing you are going to do whatever YOU want to do. This is just my opinion, that and $6 will get you a latte! Anyhow, glad you are recuperating from knee surgery so well and keep up the interesting blog,I enjoy it, so much good info!

Beth, your hair looks GREAT in the first series of the black and white combo!

So many cute skirt looks. I love the vest look with the white skirt–I remember that one. These are all casual but pulled together and look lovely. It got a bit cold here the last day or so and I was so grateful–I’m nervous we’re going to have a sweltering summer, so I’ll take the cool days while we can. Hope you are well–I need to get out my white denim skirt and see what I can do now. Take good care.
