don’t get me wrong, i love neutrals, and i feature neutral-based outfits regularly on the blog. but just as much as i love them, i’ve got to break things up from time-to-time by adding a color pop to my OOTD. sometimes, as we get older, we find ourselves staying away from color. but color not only adds visual interest to any outfit, it’s also just uplifting. a burst of orange here. a pop of red there. it’s funny how a little bit of color can change our mood. am i right, ladies? so, today we’re talking how to add color to your summer wardrobe.
today, i’ve pulled in a red sweater shell from Ann Taylor. it’s the central piece of my OOTD, and what i’m building everything around. i’ve added these red ankle strap sandals to complement my sweater shell. and they’re both giving me exactly the sort of color pop i’m looking for. if red isn’t your color, you can imagine pulling off the same outfit with any other color. and if you don’t want to be matchy-matchy, pair complementary colors for even more visual interest.

this outfit works because it’s anchored by a neutral base. i’m loving these wide leg cropped pants from Talbots. i love wide leg pants so much so that i devoted an entire post to them recently. they’re so much fun, and what makes these cropped ones so great, they work well with any pair of legs—long or short.

adding color to a neutral base is an easy way to spice up your wardrobe. even if you traditionally stay away from colors, pulling in a colorful pair of sandals or a visually interesting scarf is an easy way to dip your toes back into the world of technicolor. you won’t regret it, i promise.

Beth,
I LOVE your entire look today, from the hair to the sandals!!! It just looks so sharp, classic, but SHARP! Question…. do you have to have a racerback bra to wear with the top, or does your regular bra work?
Thanks,
Cindy
Like your ideas, and the longer hair!
Very cute Beth….I love red and white! Super cute shoes too. Oh and the white crop pants, very nice….you look great Beth!
I see since the pandemic your hair has gotten very long. Are you going to let it keep growing? I’ve been trying to let my short hair grow so I could copy your previous hairstyle. Just asking.
Love that color on you! I feel a pop of color can help brighten our attitude for the day. Also, being so fair colored myself a pop of color can reflect some color on my face so I don’t look so washed out. Great outfit!
Chic! I like this corally-red color. It’s gorgeous, and you look good in it. I’m also a fan of the wider-leg cropped pants–I have a pair of white ones that I wear with tons of different things. So comfortable. When I first had my knee surgeries, I wore wider legs for a while because I was bothered by things that close to my legs, and I got to like them quite a bit.
Love this look Beth and the top is sensational. I am going to get my ears pierced:used to have them, but that was years ago now so I will have to redo them, but as I/we get older, earrings really add beauty and style. So classy!
I love your haircut.
I agree, chic and timeless. There is also something about summer breezes in a bob that is enchanting. Love all things coral, and can hardly wait to escape to my fav shoe store to get coral shoes/sandals. You convinced me a while ago to depart from beige and black – and we all need a little extra colour these dark days. Thanks Beth.
You looks so nice. I think your husband would have liked you in this outfit. God bless you.
Cute,colorful and summer-ready!
Love those sunglasses 😎
Love the color pops and the touches of gold…especially the earrings!! I’m not usually a fan of ankle-strap sandals/shoes, but they work with this outfit. For tall gals, those Talbot’s pants work…but for shorter, petite gals…not so much. For us shorter gals, a more form-fitting crop with some spandex would be more flattering.
Lovely post. I love color especially orange. Great purse!
Such a great outfit! That colour looks amazing on you especially with the gold jewellery and your lovely hair!

Great summer “pop” of color. Sometimes we have to remind ourselves to add a little color to “energize” our look.
