why i love summer dresses | the shirtdress

we’re continuing our series why i love summer dresses, and we’re focusing on the mighty shirtdress.  what a fun and flexible dress:  it comes in so many shapes, styles, and colors.  i’m particularly excited today, because i’m going to take a shirtdress i wore in the fall and show you how how to wear a shirtdress for summer.  they key, ladies, is in the accessories:  a simple sandal swap here and a bag swap there can breathe new life into an old favorite.

why i love summer dresses

this week we’re talking about dresses.  yesterday, we featured a satin maxi dress on the blog.  it’s the perfect dress to dress up for an evening out (or in) depending.  today, we’re focused on the shirtdress.  i’ve got on a denim one (similar here and here).  there are so many different styles of shirtdresses, though.  i’ve put together some i love, ranging from a button-up one to a flutter sleeve one.

the same dress last fall

in our post how to wear a denim dress, i showed you a denim shirtdress i first featured in the fall of 2018.  it’s one of my favorite dresses, not just because it’s denim, but because of how well it pairs with accessories.  the dress came with a self-tie sash that i swapped for one of my favorites โ€“ a classic braided belt. these suede booties are seeing a lot of action lately. theyโ€™re a great transition item thatโ€™s helping to ease my wardrobe from summer to fall. the mid-heel height is perfectly comfortable, and the gold grommets add just enough detail to give them some oomph.

i love how swapping out a belt and booties  breathes new life into the dress.  i’m loving strapped sandals this summer, and there’s nothing like a simple leather belt to contrast against denim.  i said it once, and i’ll say it again:  you can breath new life into any old favorite through accessories.

About The Author

  1. If I might, I suggest vitamin E oil for your knee replacement scar. Will help fade the scar.otherwise, I really like the outfit. Know what you mean by southern heat,I live in Florida and it is beginning to feel a lot like summer. The mask only helps make it feel warmer! But…………..

    1. thanks, susan! i am using vitamin E. the surgery was eight weeks ago so all in all the scar is coming along nicely. i expect by the end of the year it will be looking good. but even better than that i have my vibrant life back, working out regularly, and can wear heels again.

      1. Glad you are . Hope you’re feeling well. My right knee is just about 2 yrs old, scar and pain gone. Left knee done about a year ago. no pain, scar almost faded. Amazing what can be done these days by the trusted orthopods!
Hope you don’t have to have any more repairs. Some days I feel like the bionic woman (with style?)! Stay safe!
        Best wishes.

I love this dress on you. I love the look. I am very short wasted and always feel odd in a belt. Any suggestions?

    1. it can be a challenge to wear belts when you’re shortwaisted. have you tried one at your hip instead of your waist? it might work.

Love the looks! And purse and sandals. The only link I donโ€™t see is for your beautiful gold link bracket. I โ€œneedโ€ one if you know what I mean!!! Can you share? Thanks!

Oh, Beth! Whether today’s Summer look or last Fall’s, “thou shalt not covet!” rings in my head! You look fabulous and “feel good!” in both OOTD. I believe young people would say, “You rock!” The colors you chose for today to accessorize are exactly as I’d choose…and I already own similar suede booties. Gotta try finding myself just the right denim shirtdress. Thanks for all the inspiration!~

    1. you are always so dang sweet, sylvia! thanks so much for all of your encouragement.

So loving your dress week Beth thank you for the fabulous ideas. I adore dresses especially as a petite woman in her fifties. Your denim dress looks like my dress from Draper James which I wear incessantly this summer, but now I will have to drop a hint about that gorgeous bracelet! You look fantastic happy summer:)

It’s amazing how just a few changes make the dress appropriate for different seasons. Cute!

  7. Hi Beth, every day I like more the styles you show us, you look very youthful and elegant with everything you wear, health and blessings.

I love the booties! I have recently bought two new pairs of shoes for fall – one a sling back animal print, the other a black flat, and now the hunt is on for some suede booties! I think they will be the finishing touch to some of my existing wardrobe pieces. I shop less frequently than most women I think, but I am very selective about what I purchase like some good quality basic pieces that I supplement with a few more moderately priced trendy pieces. My daughter has always gravitated towards wearing dresses instead of shorts or jeans. She said she feels more polished, but it’s just easier to pick one from the closet and slip it on – she is a busy professional with two young children and it’s a way to get a chic look in a hurry. Add a cute necklace and some killer sandals or booties and away you go.
