5 Summer Style Rules I Ditched After 50—But This One’s a Keeper

Summer style over 50 doesn’t have to follow anyone else’s rules. In fact, I’ve learned that fashion “truths” often expire—and the best thing you can wear is confidence. Some style rules I’ve gladly ditched (looking at you, no sleeveless after 50), but there’s one I’ll never let go.

☀️ The Summer Style Rule I’ll Never Break: White Is Always Right

There’s nothing chicer than a crisp white blouse, a pair of linen pants, or a flowy summer dress in this seasonless staple. White reflects the heat, flatters every skin tone, and elevates the simplest silhouette into something effortlessly elegant.

And no, I don’t save it for special occasions or follow the “no white after Labor Day” myth. I wear white when I want to feel fresh, confident, and pulled together—which is most days.

Style Tip: Keep a stain stick in your handbag and wear seamless nude underpinnings. Life happens, but that doesn’t mean your outfit can’t shine.

🛑 Summer Fashion Rules to Break After 50 (and What to Wear Instead)

Because outdated style rules don’t stand a chance in a well-dressed, confident closet.

✂️ 1. “Women of a Certain Age Shouldn’t Wear Shorts”

Let’s cut the nonsense. My legs have walked me through life. They’ve earned the right to be seen—and cooled off.

There was a time when style advice told us to “cover up” after 50. But let me be clear: I wear shorts because they’re practical, flattering, and stylish. These black textured beauties are structured enough to look polished and relaxed enough to wear on repeat.

New Rule: If your legs work and you like the look, wear the shorts. No apology needed.

✂️ 2. “Sleeveless Is Off-Limits After 50”

I’ve always worn sleeveless, and that’s not changing anytime soon.

My arms have carried babies, swung tennis rackets, and wrangled German Shepherds. Why would I hide them now? This blue shift dress is sleeveless, breezy, and perfect for steamy summer days. Add a pop of red for some patriotic flair, and you’re golden.

New Rule: Sleeves are optional. Confidence isn’t.

✂️ 3. “Coastal Grandmother Only Works at the Beach”

While the internet gave it a name, I’ve been dressing like a stylish matriarch for years—no ocean breeze required.

This aesthetic isn’t just for seaside living. It’s about easy elegance, natural fabrics, and pieces that say, “I’m polished, but I have nothing to prove.” The striped shirtdress, the straw tote, the white slides—it’s not just coastal, it’s classic.

New Rule: You don’t need beach access to dress like you own the shoreline.

✂️ 4. “Save Your Best Pieces for Special Occasions”

There was a time I saved my silk blouses, leather bags, and bold jewelry for weddings and big events. Not anymore.

Now? I wear my favorite earrings to the grocery store. I carry the beautiful handbag on an ordinary Wednesday. Because waiting for a special occasion is a great way to never wear what you love.

New Rule: Life is the occasion. Dress like it.

✂️ 5. “Don’t Repeat Outfits”

Once upon a time, I thought I had to reinvent the wheel every time I got dressed. These days? I reach for what works. On repeat. If it ain’t broke? Right?! A simple summer uniform is as easy as a tee, denim, and sandals. Add a belt and suede handbag for texture. Voila! Easy peasy summer uniform.

Great style isn’t about variety for the sake of it. It’s about knowing what makes you feel amazing and wearing it unapologetically. Repeating an outfit doesn’t make you lazy—it makes you brilliant.

New Rule: Repeat the outfit. Edit the attitude.

🛍️ Want to Shop These Looks?

If you see something you love, I’ve made it easy to recreate each outfit. Just like in my other style posts, you’ll find clickable shopping links placed next to each outfit photo—that way, you can shop the pieces while you scroll. I include exact items when available, and when they’re not, I’ve found close alternatives that still hit the mark.

From classic black shorts to breezy dresses and statement accessories, everything’s linked and ready. Whether you’re team petite or prefer regular sizing, I’ve got you covered.

👠 FAQ: Summer Style Over 50

Q: Can I still wear shorts after 60?
Absolutely. Look for structured fabrics and flattering lengths. Style is about proportion, not permission.

Q: Is sleeveless appropriate for women over 50?
Of course. Sleeveless tops and dresses are flattering, breathable, and timeless. You’ve earned the right to bare arms.

Q: What is “coastal grandmother” style?
It’s a polished, effortless aesthetic built around linen, neutrals, natural fibers, and classic accessories. Think easy elegance—not location.

Q: Is it okay to repeat outfits after 50?
Yes! In fact, smart style often relies on repetition. Build your wardrobe around looks you love—and wear them often.

🎯 Bottom Line: Rules Are Optional. Style Isn’t.

I’ll always wear white in the summer. That’s my anchor. But I’ve let go of every other rule that told me what I “shouldn’t” do after a certain age. Sleeveless? Yes. Shorts? Absolutely. Statement earrings at brunch? You bet.

Because style at a certain age means you’ve earned the right to wear what you love—loudly, proudly, and without a second thought.

Beth – I love that you can rock shorts and short dresses. Actually I’m envious. My poor legs are covered in veins and now crepey skin, and it’s a tragic situation.
While I wear shorter things around the house and sometimes running errands, I am no longer able to wear those things when dressed nicely.
If I had nice legs, I would definitely wear them – so much more comfy in our hot southeast summers. ☀️

    1. Beth Djalali

I so appreciate you sharing this. You’re right—crepey skin and veins can make dressing in the heat feel tricky, and that’s something I haven’t personally had to contend with. But I hear you. It’s frustrating when comfort and confidence don’t always align. I’m a big believer in wearing what makes you feel beautiful, whether that’s longer hemlines, breezy midi dresses, or lightweight pants that keep you cool and covered. And please know—you’re not alone. These conversations matter, and I’m so grateful you’re here to have them. 💛

Beth, you speak our truth! We, the 50+ are so tired of being told we’re too old to wear what we want. Thank you for confirming what I believe and giving me the boost of confidence I need to just wear it!

    1. Beth Djalali

Thank you so much! Isn’t it wild that we still have to defend our right to wear what we like after 50? I say, if it makes you feel fabulous, it’s fair game. Confidence never goes out of style—and neither do women like us. Keep wearing what you love, and let the age police find a new hobby! 💪💃

  3. Carolina Girl

I love the quote in your blog, “Life is the occasion.” I’ve said that before in reply when someone asks, “What’s the occasion?”

    1. Beth Djalali

Ooh, I love that you’ve said it too! Kindred spirits, clearly. 🥂 Isn’t it the best answer? No invitation required—life is the occasion. So let’s dress up, show up, and never wait for permission to feel fabulous. 💃✨

  4. CyndeeKay

    Thank you, Beth
I often struggle with choosing shorts and wearing sleeveless clothing. I’m embracing wearing both right now. Because my friends don’t wear these items, I often choose to “look like them”. I need to “be me”. Thank you for the confidence boost!

    1. Beth Djalali

This makes my heart happy. Truly. It’s so easy to shrink ourselves to match the comfort zones of others—but you deserve to take up space in your own skin. Wear the shorts. Rock the sleeveless. Be the friend who inspires them to try something new. You don’t need anyone’s permission to be fully, fabulously YOU. 💛💪

  5. Carole Jones

I am 75. My skin on my arms are starting to look bad. Can I still wear sleeveless tops?

    1. Beth Djalali

Absolutely you can—and you should if you want to. Here’s the truth: arms don’t expire. Wrinkles, spots, texture—that’s just proof you’ve lived a beautiful, full life. Anyone bothered by it can go stare at a wall.

Confidence is your best accessory, and sleeveless is not reserved for the under-40 crowd. You’re 75 and fabulous. If a sleeveless top feels good on your body, it belongs on your body. End of story. 💥💪💋

“Life IS the occasion.” Love it!

    1. Beth Djalali

Right?! It’s the ultimate style mantra. Why wait for a reason when being alive is reason enough? Pour the good wine, wear the great dress, and strut through the cereal aisle like it’s a runway. 💃🍷✨

  7. Lorraine Turkel

You are an inspiration! Thank you for validating my style choices to continue to dress like myself and not my age!

  8. Margo Harden

I want to see long summer dresses.

  9. Sahyli

    Absolutely true and inspiring.
