yesterday, we took a look at the classic color combination of black and white. today, we continue with that theme with the focus on the versatile white blouse. if you’ve read a top ten list of wardrobe staples, you know a white shirt always makes the grade. most of us think of a button-up when white shirts are mentioned. a simple button-up goes underneath a crewneck sweater with ease or they can be worn with a pencil skirt for a chic offic look. but white shirts come in a variety of shapes, sizes and packaging so if a white button-up isn’t your cup of tea there’s bound to be a white blouse that is to your liking.
today, y’all get a few glimpses of my backyard that’s finally finished! there was a hiccup or two along the way. mainly, an irrigation leak that was solved once and for all Monday morning along with a gatepost being replaced. and, yes, I’m obsessed with my new outdoor digs. this one simple project has been in the planning stages since i moved to Georgia! landscapers can be a tricky bunch to work with… but i finally found Southern Grounds Landscape that’s been a dream to work with. a landscape plan was already in place thanks to landscape architect Gayle Helden of Greengate Studio. let me tell you the backyard has been transformed into a beautiful functional space. just like our wardrobe our homes need to work for us providing spaces where we can work, eat, sleep, and relax. there’s a hammock in the back yard that was mr. style’s favorite to sneak in a nap or two. so i guess it’s safe to say the backyard can pull double-duty. even triple since i can dine al fresco out here.
if you caught yesterday’s post the classic color combo black and white was in play with white denim and a black crewneck. today, i’ve reversed the color scheme with black Bermuda shorts and a versatile white blouse. this time of year i love to pair a long sleeve shirt with shorts. it works! especially when the temps are fickle. a third layer can easily be added into the mix but if and when the temps cooperate this simple outfit can fly all on its own.
shorts come in a variety of lengths and you’ve seen me wear a 4″ inseam all the way to Bermuda shorts which skim your knee. today’s ootd features black Bermuda shorts in a stretch twill.from one of my favorite designers Vince that exudes a modern, timeless aesthetic. but there are more affordable options here, here, and here. the Thomas Mason blouse (old, similar here, here, and here) for J.Crew is loaded with versatility. it can be dressed down with shorts or elevated to a luxe look with an evening skirt or tuxedo pants. sandals were the name of the game today so i slipped into a pair of gold metallic sandals (old, similar here, here, and here) that act as a neutral. a gold link bracelet from Julie Vos and gold hoops add spit and polish to this casual outfit that could easily go from backyard bbq to lunch with the girls.

an oversized white shirt is the perfect summer addition.

Love a crisp white shirt. I recently reorganized my closet – it used to be arranged short sleeve to long sleeve tees and shirts. Now it’s staged by color – white, then black, then navy, etc. I must have about 15 white shirts – ranging from cotton, blends, linen, eyelet and lace. I do arrange them sleeveless, to short sleeve tees, then long sleeve tees, then the shirts. My retirement wardrobe is very versatile, and it’s more or less a capsule wardrobe, albiet not necessarily a low number of items, but everything works.
I think you hit the nail right on the head…you need to have different white shirts. This way you have a variety of looks, but still keep that classic style. I used to think one button up would do, but now, like you, have several white tops which allows me options to choose from.
Would love to know how you decide whether to wear gold or silver jewelry with your outfits. I wouldv’e chosen silver with your OOTD.
That look is for me! You look great. I really like the 13″ shorts. Just what I need. Your yard looks awesome. Thank you.
Love your backyard!
Love white and black! My co-workers used to joke that was my uniform! Thanks for sharing and just love your blog and new hairstyle! Oscar is a doll too!
Your outfit looks nice and cool! I really like Bermuda shorts on you (and me)!
Hi Beth, love the white shirt, you can never go wrong having them in your wardrobe. If in doubt a white shirt.
Your garden is looking lovely, its really coming along and your new Pixie hairdo suits you, xoxo Julie from England 🇬🇧
Have always loved a white button down, and now love the tunic length like the one you are wearing. I usually have five whites in rotation at any given time, regof season. I find them cool in the summer and warm in the winter – cotton became my bestie after menopause 😉
Love your yard, Beth. I live outside as soon as possible and we eat all out meals outside. Those of us who have yards to escape to right now, are truly fortunate. Enjoy🌷
It turned out great! I know you are very pleased with having a place to enjoy the outdoors.
I forget that a white blouse can be more than button up so I’m looking to buy something that will get more wear, it must be soft and not see through. Some of the new fabrics are nice. I hate ironing.
Hi Beth, very pretty white shirt, I own a few but not longer in the back, I do not know if is a good idea for s 5′ 2″ women like me. I will be looking for one
Beth-is that hay in one of your garden beds?
tha is pine straw. it’s an alternative to mulch.
Comfy and classy look for all women. I buy white blouses and shirts whenever I find one I like. Sleeveless and cap sleeve for under cardigans, jackets, and kimonos, short sleeve, long sleeve and my favorite, 3/4 sleeve. There’s rarely an outfit that doesn’t work with a white blouse. I love sheer, flowy ones too – I just pop a lightweight, skin-tone cami or tank underneath. Bermuda’s are my favorite shorts.
Your my hair inspiration. I’m fourteen months without coloring my hair. I still have another nine to twelve months to reach my gray goal. It has been so liberating not to color every three weeks!
the best part about going au naturel is the upkeep! isn’t it freeing not to have to worry about roots? keep going!
Love a crisp white shirt with black shorts. As always, you look great!
Did I miss a post where you talked about hurting your index finger? I looks swollen. Is it okay?
Thanks for the outfit inspiration!
