if you’re mad for plaid then winter is your season. some years can be pretty slim pickings when it comes to this traditional pattern that originated in Scotland. but this year it seems plaid is popping up everywhere. much like leopard print. did you know that all tartans are plaids but not all plaids are tartans? tartan is a specific Scottish plaid differentiated by different colors and patterns. tartans were often used in clothing to identify various Scottish clans and regions. you might be surprised to hear that plaid was banned altogether for over a century in Britain due to the Scottish rebellion in 1745. during the uprising, tartan plaid was worn by the Scottish military troop. my favorite plaid – black watch – was worn by the royal highland regiment. after the Scottish troops were defeated plaids were banned as the green and dark blue patterns became synonymous with rebellion.
today, i’m sporting a subtle plaid pant by Talbots. it’s several years old but a current rendition is available here. a vibrant blue turtleneck with button embellishments adds a little spice to the pants and will brighten any grey winter day. but i couldn’t resist wearing this adorable green wool coat last seen here that’s fast becoming a winter favorite. it also has a detachable faux fur collar. this time i removed the collar to let a black watch plaid cashmere scarf take center stage. but the coat looks fabulous with or without the faux fur. black watch plaid gloves and the cutest green pom-pom beanie finish this ootd with winter flair.
