The hallmarks of autumn that come immediately to mind are cozy sweaters, frothy lattes, a good set of suede boots. But there’s no denying that as our wardrobes change for the seasons, so does the need for our beauty routines to follow suit as well!
I also realize that every fall, my hair cut changes a bit, as I recently just went even further with more shaggy layers to liven up my look! Anybody else??
The cooler weather has me reaching for richer moisturizers and makeup in earthy shades of mauve, navy, wine, and rich browns. The new season always feel like a sense of rebirth and so what a great time to reinvent your makeup stock and get excited for all of the upcoming holiday festivities!
Here are some ways you can start to revamp your beauty shopping cart with some essentials I can’t get enough of for the fall season.

This is an area of beauty that I cannot physically live without come fall and into winter…a fabulous lip balm!! Having one on hand to wear in the day under my moody fall lip shades and even at night before I go to sleep (to mask my lips with), is a must. We all know that if you’re choosing to wear darker fall lip shades, you can’t put them on dry flaky lips - yikes!
Milani Rose Butter Lip balm (what I’m wearing in this post) is a great budget friendly version that feels delightfully hydrating on the lips with the faintest rose smell. I wear this at night before bedtime. And in these photos I’m also staying with the balm theme by wearing a new formula by L’Oreal called their Glow Paradise Balm in Gloss that I’ve ordered in 3 shades already! This shade is “Rose Harmony” and looks beautiful with more prominent eye makeup because it’s not too dark. Isn’t it easy and pretty??
Every season calls for a new tube of mascara don’t you think?? I like to go for volumizing mascara formulas for fall. Plumping up our lashes can really give the eye bed a nice POP!
Maybelline Falsies Lash Lift mascara is my current drugstore fave because I love the double-curved wand with loads of bristles to attach to every lash. If a prestige mascara is something you don’t mind spending money on, I highly suggest the Lancome Monsier Big mascara as a fabulous volumizing find!
Most of us experience our skin feeling a little drier (or a lot in my case!) during the upcoming fall and winter months. So we need to adjust our skincare products to match the changing seasons. This is due to environmental humidity being low and our skin being exposed more to forced heat indoors, which dries skin out. We don’t lose oil production, it’s just that our skin loses the ability to retain water come later in fall and winter.
I’m really into the feel of the Elizabeth Arden Visible Difference Refining Moisture Cream and how plump it makes my skin feel these days! I use it in the evening because it acts like an occlusive, which are moisturizing ingredients that create a physical barrier on the skin to prevent water loss and lock in hydration.
For the daytime, I’m still really into Neutrogena HydroBoost with SPF 50 because of the high SPF and the hyaluronic acid content!
Move over light and bright pastel shades of spring and summer, and hello warm, moody, earthy shadow vibes! I treat myself to new shadow palettes with the chaining of the seasons and I chose this one that has 16 rich and creamy shades with various finishes of matte to metal foil to play with by Nabla. They are very well known for their shadow palettes and how smooth and vibrant that shades are. In my look I have on 3 of the matte brown shades mixed with two shimmer amber + champagne shades.
Nabla Side By Side Nude Palette, $39, is what I used in these photos. The metallic foil shadows are so beautiful and expensive looking on so don’t be scared of a bit of shine!
Another great palette is the one I used on Beth for her makeup mistakes YouTube video + blog post - the Colourpop Cold Stone Fox palette. $35, which includes some cooler mauve and plum shades if you prefer those over warmer browns.
Speaking of…Guess what the easiest and most universal eyeliner shade is… BROWN. It can compliment blue, green, hazel, grey and brown eyes! During the fall is the best time to bust out the warm hot chocolate brown pencils and pens to really show off your eyes! Sorry black, you’re just too harsh for when the weather turns and we tend do lose a lot of natural color in our faces!
If you like liquid liners, I highly suggest trying the L’Oreal Infallible super slim liner in the shade brown. I love how long it truly lasts and the pen tip is so easy to maneuver. And in terms of my favorite traditional brown eyeliners, I can’t get enough of the long-wear Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner in shade “Bourbon.”

Hey Jenny Sue – I’d like your feedback on a bright lip on someone with green eyes and white hair. I have read that you shouldn’t wear bright lipcolor unless you have a high contrast face/hair. But Beth isn’t high contrast and she looks wonderful with a red lip! What say you?
What a fun article! I’m always on the lookout for good lip balms and now I have 2 new ones to try! In addition, it always bears repeating that a good sunscreen is an essential whatever the season.😊
Great recommendations! Do you have one for a serious eye primer that will keep eyeliner and shadow from moving around the eyelid of my deeper set eyes? Thank you.
