Now you see it, now you don’t. If you struggle with your foundation disappearing throughout the day after you apply it, then this post is for you! I'm going to show you my budge-proof foundation technique. And to put a cherry on top, when I do my foundation in this exact layering technique, I have found my skin looks even BETTER than when I apply it in the traditional way!!
Of course, with it still being pretty hot and humid here in Georgia, anything I can do to keep my foundation from sliding off my face during the day is a win! Keep reading to see my simple step-by-step tutorial on how you can easily try this budge-proof foundation routine the next time you apply your makeup!

I’m using the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel To Cream moisturizer. The key here is to not over moisturize however. A thin layer will do, work it in really well and let completely dry.
Use a small amount of loose translucent powder. I like to do this with a powder puff, and gently roll the loose powder over the center part of my face first then around the perimeter of the face. Definitely, less is more here, just pat in enough powder to take away any shine on the face but the powder should look undetectable once applied. I always use my holy grail Laura Mercier setting powder.
Now for setting spray. This is your extra insurance product! You want to apply this over the entire face and let dry completely before moving on to the next step. I like to spray mine in an X motion than a crisscross motion. I enjoy using the Morphe Continuous Mist spray because it applies in an aerosol form which seems to apply more evenly than the spray bottles.
It’s time to prime! Pick your favorite skin primer. I’m using the Rare Beauty Pore Diffusing Skin Primer. Use this to cover your entire face and rub it in with your fingers until it sinks in nicely. Again, this needs to dry for at least 30+ seconds before you move on to the next step.
Finish with foundation. I’m wearing the L’Oreal Age Perfect Radiant Serum foundation in shade 40 and applying it with the BK Beauty contoured foundation brush.
Applying your foundation with a brush instead of your fingers will keep your foundation looking more airbrush-like and non-streaky! I also applied my concealer right after this step as well.
If you have extra oily skin, you could go back and repeat step 2 and roll in a little bit of extra translucent powder on top of all of this to set once more. But I have mature dry skin, so I stop after step 5. Layering these products in this way will no doubt shock you into how GOOD and FLAWLESS your skin will appear. Plus, your looks will stay locked and loaded all day long!

Thank you, Jennifer. Great tips! I’ll keep this post to refer back to as well.
So glad you enjoyed this one Carolina Girl!
What about sunscreen? Thanks!
Agree! In the South we can’t be without it.o
Yes sunscreen is important! My foundation I included in this post has SPF 50 in it, but you could always use a moisturizer that includes an SPF as well – many do these days!

Interesting! I live in Florida and never knew that… I did it all backwards with the powder and setting spray last!!! I shall try that tomorrow!
hey Linda! your way is not wrong at all, that’s the more traditional way of doing it. but for some reason, this way of layering seems to work even better at making the look last longer! give it a try and see!
Can you recommend a fragrance free setting spray? So many of us are allergic to fragrance. Thanks!
Jeanne, just FYI I use the Revolution Sports fix and it has no fragrance whatsoever and works really nicely. I get it at Ulta.
Linda
I’ve heard good things about the Honest Beauty Save Face shield spray and their products are typically fragrance free! >> https://bit.ly/3zvMvih
Hi Jennifer, thanks for this post. This is a different way of applying makeup than what I’m used to but I’m going to give it a try. My skin is combination/normal so I’ll try your tip for oily skin.
you’re so welcome Nancy! It’s definitely a new spin on layering these products but definitely give it a try – let me know if it works for you! And since you’re oily, be sure to add that extra LIGHT layer of loose powder at the end!
I see that the Mercier powder contains talc, can you make other recommendations for a powder?
HI Deb. Yes the Aesthetica matte finishing powder would be a great talc free option here >>https://bit.ly/3Ame5A5
Thank you🌻
Jennifer, I’ve been using your method for a couple weeks and it is working well. I’m almost out of both primer and setting spray. What do you think of products such as Milani’s Milani Make It Last, which combines setting spray and primer?
