I’m in a bit of a mood today: “light”, “youthful”, “vivacious”. Can’t quite put my finger on it, but it’s somewhere in that zip code. All I know is that I wanted my outfit to reflect a sense of “fun”, because sometimes—oftentimes—we’ve gotta create our own levity despite the circumstances around us. And that’s what I love so much about fashion: it’s totally possible to reflect outward what we’re feeling on the inside. And it doesn’t take much: I want to show you how a simple pair of Adidas shoes add levity to your outfits and give you that feeling of “youthfulness” I’m feeling.
Yesterday on the blog, we talked about the essential tops every woman should have in their wardrobe. I wanted to show some of those essentials in action today: I’ve taken a simple green button-down (old, similar J. Crew) and layered it with a black turtleneck (Banana Republic) for a classic wintry look. I paired the tops with a pair of cropped boyfriend jeans for a simple, casual feel.

The neutrals of the turtleneck and button-down serve as the perfect backdrop for my Adidas Superstars—a pair I’ve featured on the blog many times. The Superstars launched in 1969. They’ve gone through many iterations but have remained the same at their core. Some true staying power, making them an iconic classic.
Given the state of, well, everything, I wanted to inject a little levity into my outfit today. So, I rolled up my sleeves, tied off my shirt, and threw on a pair of sneakers. It’s amazing how a single pair of shoes can change the entire dynamics of your outfit. Just goes to show you how easy it is to dress an outfit down or back up again.
Imagine the different feelings you could create with this outfit alone by swapping out the Adidas for a pair of boots or a pair of flats? Goes to show you how little it takes to get that extra mile out of your existing wardrobe.

A quick daily style tip: try rolling up your sleeves today to draw attention upward. Stand up straight to get that little bit of extra length in your spine. Take a moment to concentrate on your breathing, and imagine those breaths filling the spaces between your spine. Take that added strength and confidence and use it to face your day.

Every Sunday this month, we’re getting Back to Basics. In case you missed it, make sure to check out our first post reset and refresh with a closet cleanse and its companion YouTube video:

I love the last 2 days’ topics – right on target for today’s ladies. I love the classics, and I throw in a few on-trend styles. Your theme of strength, style and beauty as we age is spot on. I think as we mature we really have a new freedom to be who we want. At 71, I have a hip haircut and occasionally wear my moto jacket!
I wish I knew how you keep your sneakers so white! Up here in the wintery north, no sneaks or rolled up sleeves for us. It’s supposed to be 6 degrees tomorrow, so fun has to be inside. BTW it would be great to see the outfit with other shoes or boots as you mentioned.
Every so often I dedicate a post that shows how to change your outfit with different shoes/boots. I hope you read this recent post: https://www.styleatacertainage.com/featured/change-your-shoes-change-your-outfit/
Or last week it was all about staying warm and stylish. I love these boots:https://www.styleatacertainage.com/style-at-a-certain-age/easiest-way-to-add-color-to-your-winter-wardrobe/
I love fashion & style too! Not only can we reflect how we are feeling with fashion, we can use fashion to help ourselves feel how we dress! We can dress for how we want to feel – energetic, etc.
wise words! thanks for sharing.
Loved the Daily style tip! Help for our internal wellbeing in addition to your usual great style!
thanks for reading!
This outfit looks fun and attractive on you! Even though I don’t usually feel comfortable tucking in tops, I think I could try something like this with the outer shirt tied at the waist. Thank you for showing me new ideas for clothes I already have.
you are so welcome. i’m glad the post was helpful!
Could your “light, vivacious” mood be coming from the fact that your team is playing for the collegiate national championship tonight?
Know you are hoping for a big win!!
then there’s that! Go Dawgs! Although we’re up against the Crimson Tide and we all know Nick Saban has something up his sleeve.
But we’re cheering hard tonight.
Hi Beth! First time commenting here. I noticed the unique way in which you have tied your sneakers, how did you do that?
Welcome! The laces are tied on the inside of the tongue.
I love the classics and this casual outfit you featured today. It is also nice to know you can switch out the tennis shoes for a pair of boots and will look still so pulled together and ready to take on the day.
so easy to change the footwear to fit your climate and your mood!
I was waiting for a reference to the big game tonight! Yes, Nick Saban always has a trick up his sleeve, however, the Texas A&M Aggies are the only team to best the Tide this year!!! Go Georgia!!!
thanks for the support! someone’s gotta take down the Crimson Tide. GO DAWGS!
I know what you mean about “the state of everything.” Ugh!
Love this youthful post. Just reading it and looking at your fashion makes me happy! Sneakers can make you feel light, airy…and youthful. Think I’ll wear some tomorrow. Thanks Beth!
i love to slip into a pair of comfy shoes. and sneakers fit the bill.
Hi Beth. Love your style ideas and your dogs.
Any alternative ideas for the turtleneck you frequently post?
I can’t wear a turtleneck. Think I was choked in a previous life.
Thank you.
honestly, try the sweater of your choice. a v-neck probably wouldn’t look good underneath a shirt. but try a crewneck. have you tried a tissue turtlenec? J.Crew carries them. they’re t-shirt material so very light. just a thought.
