Let me remind everyone of something. Your AGE doesn’t mean a thing when it comes to wearing colorful eye makeup. You can (and should) wear whatever you want! Makeup is fun, and just because we reach a certain age, it does not mean we are not “allowed” or “shouldn’t” wear something - in makeup, the way we style hair, or in fashion. Wear whatever brings you JOY! So if you're bored with your makeup, this post is for you.
So, this brings me to my topic of why you should play around with colorful eyeliner…
Today, Jennifer is showing us how to try colorful eye liner
She's provided us with multiple fun colors, all shoppable in-line

Brown and black eyeliner are fine, and universally loved, as shown below.
However, if you have become bored or complacent with doing the same old thing every day with your eye makeup, then this could be your way to shake things up. Behold my eye catching navy blue eyeliner example below. This was my 4th of July makeup look!
First, it’s a lot easier to apply and pull off than say a multi-colored eyeshadow look or even contouring the face. This is because your natural lash line is your guideline. Of course you can go as winged as you like, or literally just start small with applying a thin line along the lashes from the inner corner to the last outer lash. How big or bold you go is totally up to you!
And the other great news is that you can pair any colorful liner with a safe neutral shadow look you are already comfortable with! So do your shadow as usual, then just add color at the lash line!
Lastly, for us that wear eyeglasses, you can really make your peepers POP through those lenses when you wear a colorful eyeliner. It adds a bit of interest and flair that brown or black just don’t.
First pick your color. There are lots of options!
My suggestions for the easiest colors for most eye colors to pull off, are navy and a dark purple/plum. They can be the most universally flattering to start with for green, hazel, blue to brown eyes.
My navy liner as worn in the July 4th look is from LA Girl "Never-ending Navy” Ultimate Liner and my purple liner is from an older Laura Geller set and her new purple shade is called “Deep Violet".
Then as you become more used to seeing color on your lids, you could gravitate towards a bolder shade, like this grass green I’m wearing in this post. I have on the Colourpop Cosmetics liquid liner “The Hills”.
Or try an olive green liner for something more subdued. Again, no rules! You won’t know if you like the way it looks if you don't try!
Formula wise, most women find a soft eyeliner pencil the easiest to apply. You can also buff out a pencil with a liner brush and even a matching shadow to make it appear softer. I did something similar with my July 4th look and added a blue eyeshadow right on top of the liner and smudged it a bit on the outer corners.
But if you have a flair for the dramatic and bold, (and a steady hand!) a liquid liner can really make a statement.
To start off easy, just apply the colored liner on the upper lash line. And then as you become more comfortable with the idea, add a bit of that same color below the lash line about 3/4 of the way, just stopping shy of the tear duct area.
I tend to layer my colored liquid liners by drawing the liner lightly at first, letting it dry for a few seconds, then going right back over to create a more intense shade!
If you're in the market for choosing a colorful eyeliner that is super long-wearing, I’d suggest trying one of the Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeliners. They offer an amazing range of 33 shades to choose from and are waterproof!
Now, what do you think of colorful eyeliner? Would you try it?!

hey Linda! sadly my morphe palette appears to be sold out and it’s hard to find a palette with great blue/navy shades for some reason, but check out this one from melt cosmetics – has great neutral brows included which are good for grounding out colorful shades >> https://bit.ly/3PKAKeh
Love your colorful eyeliners! The July Fourth makeup was great! What color red are your lips for that day?
P.S. The mint eyeliner was nice and summery too
Hello Carolina Girl! Thanks for the sweet compliments – the red is Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint in “uncensored” – SUCH a great universally flattering red > https://bit.ly/3CuxP4d
Beth, may I make a gentle suggestion? I recently discovered your blog and I love your use of color and joy in styling. I have been going back through older posts and it’s obvious you are one of the hardest working media influencers online, if I am using that term correctly. I have only one small nit to pick and it is in regard to the overuse of the number of photographs per outfit. Really, one or two is enough for us to get the idea of the entire outfit, not six or eight. Sometimes your tagline refers to a “collection” and yet when I click on the article, there is no collection, just a whole bunch of pictures of the exact same outfit. Just my own thoughts.
Thanks so much for stopping by! When we mention collections on the blog we have created inspiration boards that show how to wear the item or items in different ways. And we also zoom in on different aspects of the outfit – shoes, handbag, earrings, etc… and we like to show the outfit in motion so it gives you an idea of how it really looks. Hope this helps!
I love playing with make-up and you are so right; it should bring you joy. I love colorful eyeliners and have a few, but fall back on my habit of wearing only black. I forget to play! Thanks for this post! I love your 4th of July look and the green with your brown eyes is gorgeous! My eyes are blue/green depending on what I’m wearing. My favorite fun liner is aqua.
I really appreciate you taking time to comment on this post Nanc! And YES remember to play around with your look – black liner works of course, but colorful liner always strikes up conversation and compliments 🙂
I’ve been experimenting with colorful eyeliners so I am very glad to read your post today! Yeah!! Thank you also for featuring different liners in various price ranges!
hey Beth. Since I am a freelance makeup artist, I love using makeup products from brands of ALL price points. I’m a big believer that you can look just as fab on a budget as opposed to only expensive dept store brands. It’s good to have options right?? have fun experimenting with your makeup!!
