You’ve heard the saying, “Different strokes for different folks,” right? This phrase definitely applies to how we apply blush by face type! It turns out that working with whatever face shape you have, can help to make sure that you look like you have a more realistic-looking flush…if that’s what you’re going for.
I think blush is a very essential part of a makeup routine. Especially after we hit 40 and over, as we lose a lot of natural color in our complexion as we age. And blush is one the best (and easiest!) ways to inject a healthy-looking flush of color that makes the face look happier.
It’s basically just like filling in your sparse brows or contouring your face – you work with the shape of your face as a guide for an easier and more natural-looking application. If you’d like a little guidance on exactly where to apply that blush, keep reading.
The Summary
Today, Jennifer is showing us how to apply blush based on our face types

How To Apply Blush By Face Type
1. Preperation
First you need to identify your FACE SHAPE. There are about 4 main face shapes that everyone can fall into – ROUND, OVAL, HEART, AND SQUARE. I fall into the oval category as you can see above in my bare cheek photo with no blush applied yet.
Then figure out your FORMULA of blush and SHADE That’s really up to you what you prefer – either a powder or cream formula, as the placement will stay the same no matter which formula you pick. Of course, shade is also dependent on your likes and your skin tone!
In today’s post, I chose to use one of my favorite blush shades and formula. I’m applying the It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores blush in shade “Love,” which is a matte plum-based pink shade. >I applied it with my trusty Anisa Beauty tapered highlight and blush brush.
One thing when it comes to blush application, is to use a brush that is not too big and/or wide, as you are working a small specific area (the cheek). And if your brush is too large, you run the risk of getting clown cheeks from using too much product!
Now you can check out what the exact placement of blush for your cheeks would be depending on your face shape below!
2. Face types
Round
Pretty self-explanatory! You’ve got softer edges and less angular features. Your cheekbones are the widest part of your face and the chin and forehead will be slightly more narrow and short.
How to apply
First, if you don’t want to amplify a round face, only use a matte blush with no shimmer, as shimmer can accentuate a round face. Add definition to rounder cheeks by applying a straight line of blush from middle of the ear down towards the outer corner of your mouth. But don’t go all the way to the mouth of course!
Oval
This is me and can be described as a curved rectangle! It’s a face that is fairly long with soft rounded edges at the forehead and chin.
How to apply
You want to start in the middle of the cheek – not on the apples – and extend your color at an upward angle heading towards your earlobes. You’re wanting to fake a tad more width across the center of your face that can be narrow. I like to swirl my blush in a semicircle motion.
Square
If your face is about as wide as it is long, with the jawline and forehead feeling equal in width, you’re probably a square shape.
How to apply:
You will probably be wanting to add some softness to a square face. So concentrate that color on the apples of your cheeks (closer towards the nose) and extend the pigment out towards the hairline very softly.
Heart
Usually, those with a heart-shaped face will have a more pointy chin (especially when smiling) with high and wide cheekbones and a slightly angular jawline.
How to apply
For a heart-shaped face, blend your blush in a “C” shape starting at the tops of the cheekbones. Then take that color toward the tail end of the brows.
3. Blush
Do you wear blush? If you don’t, I highly recommend giving it a shot! You’ll probably be surprised how a pop of color can really elevate your look.

Wow! What a difference blush makes…I never realized.
I like to have that color on my cheeks, but as blush is usually the last thing I apply in my make-up routine, I either forget to do it or I’m just lazy and don’t do it. I’ll have to re-think that!
I have a question for maybe a future post from you.
Is there a rule of thumb for wearing liner underneath the eyes? I’m not talking about in the water line (a term I never heard of until recently, following some bloggers), I mean actually under the eyes. It looks like you do that and it looks beautiful. I’ve tried this many times and I feel it makes my eyes look smaller. Anyway, just a suggestion. Love your posts because I love make-up!
Going to get out my blush right now!
That Milani (Luminoso) blush you linked is so pretty and the color is so soft but luminous (guess that’s why they called it Luminoso, duh!).
I think I got it when I read one of your first posts here. I love your posts but you are very bad influence on me: Ha Ha! I’m spending wayyyyy too much money on beauty products lately! blushes, lipsticks, foundations, eyeliners, eyeshadow palettes, you name it!
