Looking back through Style at a Certain Age to round up pictures of me in jeans, I realized that while I haven’t worn a ton of denim on the blog (LOL), I have shown a variety of styles. I also realized that I Prefer slim straight jeans to skinny jeans. The best bit of advice I can give for buying a pair of jeans is that once you find a pair that fits like a dream, buy two pairs of that style. Buy that style in as many different washes as they offer!

Beth, with all of her fashion editor experience, has said this before about denim; really the only way to find the perfect pair for you is to try, try, try, them on! Every body is different. Every brand is different in its sizing. Fortunately for us online shoppers, it’s been made easy to shop by the fit you’re interested in. This helps weed through the choices enough to narrow things down to a reasonable set.
These days I gravitate toward high rise jeans that have either slim straight legs or cropped wide legs. Another style I enjoy is the more relaxed fit girlfriend or boyfriend jeans. I really like the AG Ex-Boyfriend Jeans from AG at Nordstrom.
These AG jeans are not sold in petite size, but this particular style is meant to be cropped; so for a shorter person, the length is perfect. Then to give it a little crop look, I like to cuff the hem sometimes.

When it comes to shopping for regular sizes or jeans, I always look for cropped versions, rather than full length, because the cropped styles will end up hitting right at my ankle bone.
The other thing I do sometimes; if I find jeans that I really like and that fit really well, EXCEPT for in the length, I will cut them for a raw hem, or I will pay a tailor to hem them. If you find a great pair of jeans, don’t let the inseam lengths steer you away from them.
Wide leg jeans are so great! I typically wear cropped versions and in the wintertime, I will still wear the cropped version with boots or loafers.
If you’re looking for full length styles, you definitely want to get your wide leg jeans in a petite size. Otherwise, the knee placement will be off and the legs might be too voluminous and long. The other trick for balance is to look for high waisted styles.
Flare leg jeans are great for petites, especially if you don't want to try wide leg jeans. Flare jeans work well for petites in both mid rise and high rise styles.
I particularly love the true to size fit of the petite Kick Out Crop Jeans from Madewell. The rise fit is just between mid rise and high rise, with the waistband hitting right at my natural waist. These jeans are so comfortable and work year-round.

These Levi’s Straight Ankle Rib Cage Jeans are more of a slim wide leg jean, with a stovepipe-straight leg. Much like the original 501s from Levi's, these jeans don't come in petite sizes, but there are three different lengths to choose from.
Even though I chose the shortest inseam, 27 inches, I still had them hemmed so that they would be more cropped to fall above my ankle bone.
White jeans are perfectly fine to wear all year long. They are great in the fall and winter when you want a touch of light and brightness to your outfit. Plus, they go so well with fall color palettes and winter white feels so fresh and crisp.
Patch pockets are big this year, and while my white patch pocket jeans are several years old, there are plenty of great styles to choose from this year.

Ultra high rise jeans are perfect for creating the effect of longer legs. The easy thing for petites is that typically, andy high rise-regular sized jeans will fit us like ultra high rise jeans! We can also get around hemming by looking for high rise, cropped jeans in regular sizes.
These Mother jeans I am wearing are a regular size, cropped wide leg jean. They are a few years old and are not available, but check below to shop similar high waisted jeans available in petite sizes.
Another great denim style for this year are cargo jeans. These Straight Leg Cargo Jeans from J.Crew Factory for true to size – and I love all the pockets! I've never been a cargo jean gal, but this year, cargo jeans are updated with a more streamlined look and interesting seam details.
