fridays with oscar | spring refresh

if it’s friday, then it’s time for oscar unless ollie decides to make an appearance. and if it’s time to make the bed this little rascal comes running. as you can see i have my challenges tucking in those hospital corners taught years ago especially when oscar joins in the fray. ah, the joys of pethood! but i wouldn’t have it any other way.

once spring arrives, it’s time for a bedroom refresh. during fall/winter, our bed is clad in a flannel green tartan plaid that keeps us toasty warm all through those chilly months. come spring/summer it’s time to lighten and brighten. several months ago, on one of our jaunts down to the big peach i spied this organic washed cotton stripe ensemble at west elm. and, no, this isn’t a sponsored post. but it could be as i only share content i’m one hundred percent behind with all of my lovely readers. our goal here at Style at a Certain Age is to share relevant products, information and shed the spotlight on talented, hard-working female entrepreneurs from to time-to-time. variety is the spice of life. or so they say. don’t worry, the outfit of the day will always make an appearance! but i do love home design projects. maybe even more than a stylish ootd.

anyhoo, west elm caught my attention with this cotton stripe ensemble. and i bought the whole kit and kaboodle. yes, the duvet cover, shams, and matching organic washed cotton sheets all came home to athens. west elm bedding is a first for me. but they’re in the williams sonoma family so i didn’t think i could go too far wrong. our fall/winter tartan plaid duvet and shams are from williams sonoma along with our italian hotel embroidered sheets that i dearly love. when it comes to sheets, i’m a percale kind of girl through and through. there’s nothing better than crawling between crisp and cool sheets any time of the year. sateen has its loyal fans with their smooth sheen, but i’ve always preferred percale.

but i’ve been keen to test organic cotton for several years. i’ve heard great things about it. and this was the year to pull the trigger. boy-oh-boy am i glad i did. or should i say mr. style is a happy camper. he thinks these sheets are the best thing since sliced bread. and i quite agree. 

what do we like about our organic washed cotton sheets? besides the fact they’re stripe? well, they’re soft, cozy, and cool all at the same time which is a big deal to me. that is the cool factor. yes, these sheets have a distinctive cool and chic vibe. but i’m talking temperature-wise. because if there’s one thing, i dislike it’s waking up in the middle of the night feeling hot and sweaty. sheets go a long way in preventing that sort of discomfort.

another important factor when it comes to a good night sleep is pillows. how many of us have been on a lifelong pursuit of finding the perfect one? well, i found mine years ago. it’s sferra arcadia down alternative that ranges from soft, medium to firm. mine is firm. if you have allergies, this is the pillow for you as it simulates the properties of featherweight down with modern techno-fibers. and it doesn’t have the high price tag associated with down pillows, or i should say good down pillows have a high price point. there are different levels of quality peddled these days. when it comes to bedding, i’m willing to fork over a few bucks. statistically speaking, if i’m spending over half my life sleeping, then i want it to be the best possible experience.

but mr. style doesn’t quite agree with me on the pillow front. and he’s been trying all sorts of brands for years. until now. meet his favorite pillow to date – nest easy breather side sleeper. one of our kiddos recommended this pillow. it has a unique concept as it’s adjustable. that’s right, just open the zipper and adjust the fill that’s a proprietary blend of materials that provide a supportive yet supple support that mimics a down and feather pillow. let me tell you mr. style is catching a few more zzz’s now that he’s found his perfect pillow.

we added an oxford quilt to our ensemble. during the summer months, a down comforter just doesn’t cut it here in georgia. but i still love to snuggle under a lightweight blanket. sleeping with a blanket is a non-negotiable unless the air conditioner breaks and our ceiling fan goes kaput. as a child, i have fond memories of sleeping without air conditioning. the window flung wide open letting a sultry summer breeze inside. that’s probably when my love of percale sheets began. but these days let the air conditioner hum all summer long. right?!
