Kick Off The Weekend With Style!

Happy Friday, gang! Itโ€™s an exciting week as we prepare for our Style at a Certain Age 10th Anniversary festivities and special content. I spent the beginning of the week in Florida, working on photos for this Sundayโ€™s post, in which I will kick off our 10th anniversary celebration. Be sure to tune in all month for blog retrospectives, fun videos, giveaways, and more! But since itโ€™s Friday, letโ€™s kick off the weekend as we always have, with a cocktail, a great recipe, and casual outfits to inspire your weekend. Letโ€™s raise a glass and toast because Spring is in the air!

This Pilcro Plaid Blouse from Anthropologie is a fun mix of a masculine plaid print in a romantic, feminine design. Itโ€™s an elevated casual blouse that is easy to wear โ€“ especially with a pair of dark rinse jeans. These Madewell Kick Out Crop Jeans are fun and flirty, a great way to style a feminine top.

f you want to elevate your casual outfit, it always works to add metallic accessories, like this Gold Grommet Belt. Metallic accessories go just a little further to give your outfit a little sophistication and shine. Youโ€™ve seen the Frances Valentine Gold Block Heels styled with a variety of outfits I have featured in recent months, they work so well with casual and dressy ensembles โ€“ a fantastic investment!

Mid-Rise Straight Ankle Jean | Similar Blue Striped Sweater | Day Glove Ballet Flat

I tend to shop my closet for our casual Fridays with Oscar outfits and today I pulled out a Vince cashmere sweater from a few years ago to style with these light grey Mid-Rise Straight Ankle Jeans from Banana Republic. I love the color combination of light blue and light grey. It feels appropriate for this transition season, when I want to lighten up a bit, but itโ€™s still chilly out.

I have been on a bit of a kick with the Day Glove Ballet Flat from Everlane lately and itโ€™s because theyโ€™re so easy to wear with everything. Their ultra-minimal design is sophisticated and understated. The leather is soft and supple so it molds to your foot over time. Absolutely love these shoes, and they come in so many different colors!

St. Germain Cocktail

We prepared this classic French sipper in a true Royale style, nixing the sparkling water and serving it in a champagne flute. The elderflower liqueur adds just a little herbal sweetness to the sparkling wine, making it a light and refreshing drink, perfect before dinner.

Niรงoise Sandwich

I have made versions of this on Fridays with Oscar before, we did in toast form with Niรงoise Toasts, which are really and perfect for 1 or 2 people. This version, also called Pan Bagnat, is great for a small group of 3 or 4. Pan Bagnat translates to โ€œbathed breadโ€ and it refers to the process of weighting the sandwich to let the dressing and oil soak into the baguette. Itโ€™s one of the most flavorful and creative sandwiches!

Niรงoise Sandwich

A hearty, yet light and delicious sandwich, perfect for 3-4 people to share

Ingredients:

  • 1 Large Tomato cored and sliced thin
  • 1 Small Red Onion sliced thin
  • 3 tbsp. Red Wine Vinegar
  • 1 Garlic Clove minced
  • 1/2 tsp. Kosher Salt
  • 1 Baguette
  • ยพ cup Niรงoise Olives pitted (or Kalamata Olives)
  • ยฝ cup Fresh Parsley Leaves and Tender Stems
  • 3 tbsp. Capers rinsed
  • 2 tbsp. Fresh Marjoram or Oregano Leaves
  • 3 Anchovy Fillets rinsed and patted dry
  • 1/2 cup Extra-Virgin Olive Oil divided
  • 2 tbsp. Dijon Mustard
  • ยผ tsp. Black Pepper
  • 2 6ยฝ ounce Jars of Olive Oil-packed Tuna, drained
  • 3 Hard-Cooked eggs sliced thin

Instructions:

  • Lay the tomato slices on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb the tomato juices.
  • In a medium-sized bowl, combine the thinly sliced red onion with the minced garlic, 3 tablespoons of red wine vinegar, and kosher salt, toss to combine, and set aside.
  • Combine olives, capers, parsley, anchovy filets, and fresh oregano (or marjoram) in the bowl of a food processor. Pulse several times until the mixture is coarsely and evenly chopped. Add the olive and herb relish to the bowl with the onion and red wine vinegar. Give it a good stir and add 1/4 cup of olive oil. Stir in the olive oil and add the 2 tablespoons of Dijon. Mix well to fully combine and set aside.
  • Drain the oil-packed tuna (save the oil from the tuna to use in another dish). Slice the hard-cooked eggs into thin slices.
  • Use 2/3 of the olive herb relish/onion mix to evenly cover the bottom half of the baguette.
  • Then place the tuna evenly on top of the olive herb relish/onion mix. Pour the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil over the tuna. Shingle the tomato slices on top of the tuna. Then shingle the egg slices on top of the tomato. Use the remaining olive herb relish/onion mix to cover the eggs.
  • Top with the top half of the baguette.
  • Clear your work surface and stretch a large piece of plastic wrap, flat on the surface. Carefully slice the sandwich in half crosswise. We will wrap each half tightly in plastic wrap.
  • Place the halves side by side and place a sheet pan on top of the sandwich halves. Then place a Dutch oven or other very heavy pan on top of the sheet pan, positioned on top of the sandwich halves.
  • Let the sandwiches flatten for 30 minutes to one hour. Refrigerate the halves if you’re planning to enjoy the sandwiches later. If you eat them right away, unwrap the sandwiches and place them on a paper towel to absorb excess liquid for a few minutes.
  • Slice each half in half again, if desired, and serve!
