It's the timeless look that never goes out of style – rocking a classic a-line dress. One of the most flattering silhouettes, this chic look is sure to make any woman feel beautiful and confident. So why not make the most of it?
To truly understand the A-line dress, it's important to know its defining characteristic: a fitted bodice that gradually flares out from the waist to the hem, resembling a capital letter "A". This simple yet elegant design is what makes the A-line dress so perfect for any body type. Its flowy skirt can camouflage wider hips or thighs, while its fitted top can highlight a smaller waist and accentuate a fuller bust.
It's important to note that A-line dresses come in a variety of lengths, from mini to midi to maxi. Choosing the right length can be a game-changer in terms of how the dress flatters your body. For instance, a midi A-line dress can elongate your legs, making you appear taller and leaner. Meanwhile, a maxi A-line dress can create a beautiful silhouette and hide any problem areas.
When it comes to fabrics, A-line dresses come in a wide range of materials, from structured cotton to flowy chiffon. It's important to choose a fabric that suits your body type. For instance, if you have a fuller figure, choosing a structured fabric can help smooth out any lumps or bumps. On the other hand, if you have a smaller frame, a flowy fabric can add volume and create a more dramatic effect.
Another one of my top flattering silhouettes for women over 50 is the wrap dress. With its iconic v-neckline and waist-cinching design, wrap dresses create an hourglass shape that enhances the curves of a woman's body. The adjustable fit allows for comfort and ease of movement, while the versatile design is suitable for any occasion.
Whether dressed up or down, a wrap dress is an ideal choice for those looking for a timeless, sophisticated look. Diane Von Furstenberg leaped into popularity in the 70s with her release of the simple wrap dress. These days, we can find faux wrap dresses; where the front has a wrapped, tie detail at the waist. The faux wrap dress gives the illusion of a wrap dress and is very easy to wear; both options create flattering silhouettes.

High-waisted trousers elongate the legs, making it another one of the most flattering silhouettes for women over 50. They also provide coverage for the midsection, making them a great choice for those who prefer a bit more coverage. Opt for a wide-leg pair in a neutral color, such as black or navy, for a timeless and sophisticated look.
To achieve the ultimate sophisticated look, pair the high-waist trousers with a blouse or statement top tucked in at the waist. This will accentuate the slim waistline created by the high-waisted design while also showing off your top of choice. For a more casual look, pair the trousers with a fitted t-shirt or sweater, or even a wrap dress, to create a look that can easily transition from day to night. Play around with different combinations to create flattering silhouettes for any occasion.
Tunic tops are a versatile and comfortable option for women over 50. They come in various styles, from flowy and loose to more fitted designs, so you can choose what works best for your body type. Tunic tops usually have a longer length that covers the hips and can be worn with leggings or skinny jeans for a chic and effortless look. Tunic Tops are probably the number one easiest way to create flattering silhouettes with any number of bottoms instantly.
When choosing a tunic top, consider the neckline that flatters your face shape the most. A V-neck or scoop neck can elongate your neck and draw attention upward, while a boat neck or cowl neck can add some dimension to your upper body. You can also play with different textures and prints to add some personality to your outfit. Opt for a printed tunic top if you want to make a statement, or go for a solid color if you want a more timeless and classic look.
Tunic tops are also great for layering. You can wear a cardigan or blazer on top of your tunic top when the weather is cooler, or add a scarf to accessorize your outfit. A long necklace can also add some visual interest and draw attention to your face.
Fit and flare skirts are another flattering option for women over 50. These skirts are fitted at the waist and then flare out, creating a fun and feminine silhouette that is both comfortable and chic.
When choosing a fit and flare skirt, look for one that sits at your natural waistline and falls just below the knee. This length is flattering for most body types and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.
Pair your fit and flare skirt with a fitted blouse or tunic top to create a balanced look. Avoid wearing anything too loose or baggy on top, as this can overwhelm the shape of the skirt.
Flats or low heels are the perfect shoe choice for a fit and flare skirt. They keep the look casual and comfortable while still being stylish. Add a statement necklace or pair of earrings to complete the look and draw attention to your face.
Embracing these five flattering silhouettes can revolutionize your wardrobe and your confidence, no matter your age. From the simple elegance of an A-line dress to the versatile appeal of high-waisted trousers, these styles cater to every woman's unique figure and personal style. Remember to experiment, find what works best for you, and always prioritize feeling comfortable and confident in your skin. As Coco Chanel once said, "Fashion fades, only style remains the same." So go forth and embrace your timeless style with these flattering silhouettes.

She’s 65, 5’8, and size 8.
You have mentioned that you are 5’8″ and so I am wondering where you find pants that are long enough. I am 5’6″ with long legs and I am finding it near impossible to source full length pants that are long enough, even with a flat shoe. I am not talking about the prevalence of cropped pants, that is a separate issue. I used to rely on Talbots Long sizes but they seem to have discontinued them and besides, Talbots quality has declined so much.
Have you tried Ann Taylor? They have a great fit and carry Tall sizes. Ralph Lauren is another great source for pants that are longer. Vince or Theory are also
great sources for pants.
Great advice and very helpful. I have been struggling with what to wear and this helps even for us petites. Thanks
An informative post. I’m 5’1″ (used to be 5’2″); I’m shrinking. I’m with you on everything here except the fit and flare skirts. I find that they are not flattering and all, and I’ve tried because I like the look. A-line dresses are sometimes questionable too. It depends on how much they flare out. I love that red A-line dress you feature.
I’m going to have to go on a “try on” trip!
