it’s not only blue jean season but blazers, and coats, and jackets have made a reappearance. there’s something special about a third layer. not only will a third layer add warmth when we need it. but it’s the piece of clothing that completes an outfit. blazers, and coats, and jackets take an outfit from good to great.
happy Labor Day, gang! hard to believe the long weekend has arrived, and with it, the unofficial start to fall. but who doesn’t love boot season? who can resist sweaters? i, for one, have long been a fan of blazers. and put together a women’s guide on how to wear a blazer this fall. that’s because, well, blazers are one of my favorite items to wear, and they’re also probably the single most popular item on the blog. over the years, i’ve worn them with sweaters, turtlenecks, and denim boilers, to name a few. i’ve dressed them up. i’ve dressed them down. i’ve worn them every which way. here’s a mini-guide i put together last year because, in reality, blazers never really go out of style. if you need guidance as to how blazers should fit, here’s a YouTube video that discusses all things blazers.
now that we’ve discussed blazers, i wanted to touch on the subject of jackets. first, the definition of a jacket is an outer garment extending to the waist or hips. the difference between a jacket and a coat is the length. Lands’ End has a nice article that discusses How to Know the Difference.
today’s ootd starts with a cargo jacket from Banana Republic. notice how the length hits my hips. what i noticed about this washed cotton jacket was the shawl collar that can either lay flat or buttoned to keep out the cold. it comes in four colors – black, camo green, cream, and camo. it has a loose fit which makes it perfect for layering over blouses or sweaters. the addition of the belt gives it pizazz. belt it into a loose knot or tie the belt in the back; either way works. a pair of straight-leg jeans from Madewell and a utility blouse from Banana Republic are subtle neutrals that ease me into fall. for a little oomph, i added a zebra print neckerchief that can tie around my neck or wrist. don’t you love options? cap toe slingback (old, similar here) and a baguette handbag add spit and polish to this casual chic outfit.

Love all that you do!!
Please do a few more on building capsules.
Maybe one on just the weekend capsule — having fun on the weekend, gardening, movies, dinner, family…building that wardrobe. Thank you so much

Love this look! Oh, to own the jacket in every color. You make it look so good. Also enjoy when phrases like “spit and polish” get used! Your hair looks fabulous, as well. Fall is the perfect time to practice style at a certain age…it is for me, anyway! 🥰
Happy Labor Day Beth! I missed your video this week, hope all is ok…I continue to rewatch your old vids often. 😘.
I consider myself a bit of a fashionista, but I have learned so much from you. I’ve actually purchased items similar to the ones you style. You really work hard to keep us in touch with style. Thank you Beth.
