Cruise week continues as I share a few more sights and sounds of my Mediterranean Cruise aboard the Windstar Windsurf. Windstar delivers with its small, elegant ships if you want to leave the crowds and clichés behind. I have to admit that after a full day of sightseeing, it’s nice to freshen up, change into a lovely outfit, and enjoy a scrumptious dinner. One thing that sets Windstar apart from the pack besides its intimate, luxurious setting (each cruise accommodates 148 to 342 guests, depending on the ship) is its delicious, elegantly prepared cuisine while enjoying spectacular views. It’s the Official Cruise Line of the James Beard Foundation.
My favorite restaurant was the specialty restaurant Stella Bistro, where I enjoyed a dirty gin martini, tuna tartare, rack of lamb, and chocolate souffle for dessert and the company of a new acquaintance who hails from Sugarland, TX. And, yes, I enjoy desserts all vacation long! But a beautiful dinner deserves a beautiful outfit, so I’m sharing a few tips and outfits I wore.
As the sun sets over the shimmering Mediterranean Sea, the atmosphere aboard a cruise ship transforms into elegance and sophistication. Whether enjoying a lavish dinner, attending a cocktail party, or dancing under the stars, choosing the proper evening attire is essential to make the most of your cruise experience. Here’s a guide to help you navigate your wardrobe choices for an unforgettable Mediterranean adventure.

Most Mediterranean cruises have a dress code that varies from casual to formal. On the Windstar, the dress attire is casual chic. Men and women definitely dress up, but it’s not necessary to pack formal wear. I recommend to check your specific cruise line’s guidelines, but generally, you can expect a mix of the following:
Casual Chic: For relaxed evenings on board, opt for smart casual attire. For men, think lightweight cotton or linen trousers paired with a stylish shirt, and for women, slip skirts, dresses, or maxi dresses. Comfortable dress sandals or loafers are perfect footwear.
Smart Casual: On nights designated as smart casual, gentlemen can wear dress trousers with a collared shirt, while ladies may choose elegant blouses with skirts or tailored pants. A light blazer can elevate the look for both, especially if the evening breeze is cool.

Today, I’m sharing two of my evening outfits with you. One is a floral dress from Tuckernuck with a cashmere cardigan thrown over my shoulders. The second outfit is a favorite of mine from Ralph Lauren. It’s no longer available, but I have suggested similar options. I love dresses because they’re one-and-done and always look chic. But separates give you a bang for your buck as you can mix and match with other separates.
Formal Nights: Many cruises feature formal nights where you can showcase your most glamorous outfits. For men, a dark suit or a tuxedo is ideal, accompanied by a crisp dress shirt and tie. Women can embrace their inner goddess with floor-length evening gowns or sophisticated cocktail dresses complemented by statement jewelry and heels.

When selecting your evening attire, consider the Mediterranean’s vibrant color palette. Think of azure blues, sandy beiges, and sunset oranges that reflect the stunning coastline and charming ports. Light, breathable fabrics in these colors not only look chic but also help you feel comfortable in warmer climates. Don’t hesitate to incorporate floral patterns or nautical themes that pay homage to the region’s beauty.
Accessories can elevate your outfit from ordinary to extraordinary. For evening events, consider the following:
Jewelry: Opt for bold statement pieces—chunky necklaces, chandelier earrings, or elegant bangles can heighten your look. Don't forget about a clutch or a chic handbag to keep your essentials.
Footwear: Ensure comfort by selecting stylish yet comfortable shoes. Strappy sandals or classic pumps are great options. If you plan to dance the night away, consider shoes with a steady heel.
Outerwear: The Mediterranean evenings can be breezy, especially near the coast. A light shawl or a stylish wrap can add warmth while complementing your outfit.
Pack Smart: Since cruising involves varying activities, consider versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched. Choose items that don’t wrinkle easily, making it simpler to pack them.
Layering: Layering is key to adjusting to changing temperatures. A lightweight cardigan or jacket can easily be added or removed as you move from the outdoor deck to indoor dining.
Personal Style: Ultimately, wear what makes you feel confident and fabulous. The Mediterranean cruise experience is about enjoying yourself, so let your personal style shine through.
Preparing for evening attire on a Mediterranean cruise involves balancing elegance, comfort, and personal style. With the right outfits, you’ll not only feel fabulous but also fully embrace the enchanting ambiance of nightlife on the high seas. So as you set sail towards picturesque ports, don your best attire and get ready to make beautiful memories under the Mediterranean stars!

I love that dress and how beautiful you look in it! I’m following this series closely as I am trying to get the courage to cruise solo :/ Did you have the same table and dinner companions each night (excepting for specialty dining)? Eating alone is my “final frontier” of widowhood and I have not yet accomplished it. Thanx for telling us about it.
This was a big trip for me as I traveled solo. Lot’s of fun and a big accomplishment too!
The Windstar doesn’t have strict seating assignments or assigned tables. The first night I had dinner one night all by myself but had a lovely conversation with the table next to me. The next I was invited to dinner hosted by the Cruise Director and there were six female solo travelers seated at the table. Lots of fun! The night I dined at Stella Bistro I was joined by a lovely woman from Sugarland that I met on the tour to Positano. Another night I was invited to dinner by a lovely couple I met during the safety drill. And the last night I joined group of six that I met on the cooking class tour in Split. So many lovely and friendly people on a cruise!
If you’re looking for an easy and enjoyable vacation I hope you’ll consider a cruise. I love that you only have to unpack once yet you visit mulitiple destinations. And the food and service on the Windstar are exceptional.
Hope this helps!
Love the green and gold a-line dress on you. Straight from the 70s. Thanks for sharing the pics of you and the scenery. I have to live through you. Best wishes always.
I just love the ease of the dress. And I loved the beautiful ports we sailed into on this cruise. Gorgeous scenery at every turn.
Such beautiful outfits for your cruise! Thank you for sharing. I have cruised with Windstar many times. And have loved their itineraries. Which ship was this? If you enjoy Windstar you should also look at SeaDream. Highly recommend.
This is the Wind Surf which is going in for renovations right after they sail back to Rome. Windstar is a great cruise line. So much to recommend, especially the service.
