Hello, Ladies! As far as fashion trends go, I am usually game for trying at least a couple of them each season. This year I have enjoyed incorporating vests into my wardrobe. I have always leaned a little more toward masculine styles and I think it took too long for the women’s vest to come back around. Who can forget Diane Keaton’s wardrobe from Annie Hall? Iconic! Well, I am happy the vest is back, and I think I might hang on to it even if it goes back out of fashion. Today, I am sharing How to Wear a Vest This Summer.

This Patch Pocket Vest from J.Crew has indigo stripes with a nautical feel that is perfect for summer. It also feels like a classic menswear-inspired pattern thanks to the pinstripes. I don’t typically wear accessories like scarves for a pop of color or pattern, so I have gravitated toward styling my vests with monochromatic base outfits for that pop of color.

If you look at some of our favorite brands like J.Crew, Madewell, and Anthropologie you will notice that they are mostly styling vests as tops on their own. I went that route for my post (in)Vested in Madewell Vests.

But, some vests are a little too low cut for me to wear as a stand-alone top. This is just my personal preference, but I really like how vests look unbuttoned, over a tank or tee. It’s that menswear-inspired version of the vest that I prefer.
So today, I went for a simple Vintage Rib Shelf Bra Tank tucked into the classic City Shorts from Ann Taylor. A monochromatic white outfit with a pop of cool blue – an easy way to wear a vest this summer!
My Gold Plaited Leather Belt breaks up the white with a pop of metallic gold which ties into my fisherman sandals. These sandals are old but there is a similar fisherman mule from Sam Edelman that I quite like. Or for a sporty look, you can style this ensemble with White and Gold Gola Sneakers.

I have styled many summer outfits with the Hannah Lunchbox Wicker Bag from Frances Valentine. I have the “toast” color, which is sold out. But this year FV brought the bag back in navy, pink, and green. The navy version would be perfect with my outfit today. No matter which color you go for, this bag will be on summer repeat all season long!

I’m loving this vest trend too and styling it as you do. I have fond memories of the one vest I owned as a teen in the 70’s when they were popular as you mentioned. It was grey flannel with a satin back and a small buckle in the back. In those days we were only wearing them with long sleeved shirts. How trends change!
Hi Nancy, It sounds like you were right on trend in the ’70s and now! Thanks so much for stopping by! xo Kelly
I have a similar vest that is at least 20 years old and I wore it with white jeans and a white blouse the other day. They say you should get rid of clothes you haven’t worn for five years but I’m glad I didn’t because that vest looks right on trend this year
I am always happy when I hold on to something in my closet and it comes back around! Thanks for sharing, MaryLynne, xo Kelly
