a parka comes in handy for a cold snowy day. just flip the hood for extra warmth. make certain they’re long enough to cover your hips.
wool toggle or duffle coats come in a variety of lengths. i like a hood that zips on or off for added variety.
peacoats were originally worn by sailors with broad lapels and plastic buttons. today, the style is considered iconic.
a short puffer jacket keeps the chill away. look for one that’s light enough to stash in your suitcase.
a wool military overcoat in a flattering neutral shade looks great with dresses, skirts, and pants. use colorful hats, scarves and boots to let your personality shine.
we all know a trench coat is perfect when it rains. try a shorter style that doesn’t cover up your outfit.
utility jackets are perfect on a windy spring day.
suede or leather are perfect examples of lightweight jackets that transition seasons with ease.
button up your overcoat when the wind is cold. okay, so i changed the last word of that famous lyric. all on account i’m in the frozen tundra today — aka minneapolis. but, hey, the high will be a balmy 28 degrees. i’ve brought my cashmere peacoat along for the ride, plus gloves and scarf. but today’s a great day to talk about overcoats, one of the hardest working items in your closet. so how do you build an outerwear closet? you’ll have your bases covered if you have 1 overcoat, 1 parka, 1 fall coat, 1 spring jacket and 1 raincoat.
through the years i’ve added on to my coat collection one-by-one. and i’m ready for any sort of inclement weather that comes my way. even if you live in a warm climate it’s always a good idea to have one or two coats on hand just for travel. you never know when you’ll visit minneapolis in january… so what are my favorites? classics, of course, let’s take a look.
These are all beautiful. I like all of them. I’m a sucker for a good coat–and I have different styles and types of coats, too. I was rearranging things in my closet and used an upstairs closet to store things recently when it hit me I have quite a few. Even though NC is relatively mild, and has a short winter, I have to admit that I like that I get to wear things for each season. Have a great trip in the bitter tundra of MN!

guess who’s behind on answering comments?! MN was great fun even though the temps were mighty chilly. I don’t miss the cold one bit. Although, I did have a chance to wear one of my favorite coats. Aren’t you happy you live in NC where the winters are short and mild?! You have the best of all worlds.
