if it’s thursday, then it’s time for another timeless classic straight from the archives. with fall nipping at our heels what’s better than a puffer vest that keeps the chill at bay? it’s the perfect third piece especially for those laid back weekends when denim or yoga pants are a must.
pants | shirt | sweater | vest | shoes | tote
if your to-do list is a mile long come saturday, there’s nothing better than a casual chic ootd especially when you want to squeeze in brunch or lunch to boot. when the going gets tough, the tough get comfy and stylish.
these photos were taken in san francisco back in our old stomping grounds. i remember this day well as our oldest son lived not too far from us. it was common place back then to give him a ring and invite him to brunch. the best thing about san francisco, and what i miss most, is that there are soooo many local restaurants sprinkled throughout the neighborhoods. pick one any one as they all dished up brunch on both saturday and sunday. but there was a particular restaurant that was a favorite of ours that had the most delightful courtyard seating area in the rear of the restaurant. it was a cash only establishment that required you to stand in line to place your order. our m.o. was to have one person order, one person snag the best seat possible, and one fill up water glasses and coffee mugs. afterward, we would stroll through the neighborhood with no particular agenda then bid adieu to our son. it was heaven! and even though i love athens sometimes you just can’t beat an urban city where walking everywhere is a state of mind.
if you don’t own a pair of yoga pants, you’re missing out as they are a wonderful alternative to denim. today, they are paired with a classic gingham button-up and crewneck sweater. a reversible puffer vest is added into the mix not only to ward off those chilly mornings but to add a casual preppy vibe. black and white is always all right in my book and works any day of the week. it’s a timeless color combo that’s effortless. sneakers would look fabulous with this outfit, but instead, i chose a pair of espadrilles that elevates the look. a black tote comes in hand when running errands but it ties this ootd together.
another weekend is fast approaching, ladies. are you ready? i know i am. saturday i hit the big five-nine. and i’ve noticed at the end of a decade i seem to pause and reflect. even regroup to consider what’s next? what can be done better? i have so loved each and every year that’s been granted to me. but with each passing day, there’s a sense of urgency. a mantra to live life and live it well. don’t waste a moment because it’s true that we will never pass this way again. ok, enough reflection. but i’m certain you’ll be hearing more on this subject as the swan song to my fifties is about to begin.
happy thursday, ladies!

Love your posts — and am especially enjoying your expertise with layering. Just recently relocated to the Midwest after living my entire life in the southeast, so I really need to up my layering game.
good luck in your new digs! i grew up in nebraska so the winters a tad colder than down here. but i’m certain you will love living in the midwest.

Brunch is my favorite meal–someone once said to me that we “should do away with brunch; it’s such a strange notion,” and I defended it big time! I’m a huge fan. Such a great way to graze, and relax, and just soak in the day. You look ready for all that. 59 is still so young. I love this time in life–I sometimes think our lives really are backwards–we know so much more and are so much more comfortable in our own skin when we’ve aged some. So far my 50’s and 60’s are my favorite ages. Happy almost-birthday!!
thanks, sue! i’m gearing up for the sixties, but i’ll take every day that’s given to me with gratitude.

Love this! I thought I had seen just about every post, but apparently not. Fabulous transitional outfit…gets too warm, shed the vest. xoxo
don’t you love a versatile item?! just can’t beat a puffer vest in my humble opinion.

Another good one … though not happy you’re pushing us into fall!!! I would die in all that clothing today. But I do appreciate the “food for thought” and that it’s making me evaluate what I have and what I need this coming season … though I’m in no mood to shop now.
ready or not, fall is on its way! then there’s halloween, and thanksgiving, and, well, i’m always sad to say goodbye to summer but i am looking forward to what’s next.

I really like the white sweater you are wearing. Is the exact one you have available? Your post sends me to Banana Republic which shows me a different sweater. Thank you.
hi heather,
the best and worst aspect of the blog is that i wear items that are from one to twenty years old. when that happens i do my best to link similar items.

Thank you. Your style is awesome. I have nice clothing but often have difficulty putting it together. Your posts have been very helpful. Keep up with the wonderful tips!
