Yep, this is a hot topic in 2023. While I will never tell you NOT to wear skinny jeans, there are so many options to choose from that I will encourage you to try a new silhouette. To truly transform your fashion game and banish the frumpy vibe, it's essential to embrace your body shape. Understanding and appreciating your unique figure is the foundation for finding flattering pieces that will make you feel confident and fabulous.
I will add that my primary style objective is not always to look taller or thinner; fashion is fun, and I embrace that, but there are style rules in place to keep us out of the frump zone, and one is paying attention to our body type. So, take a moment to assess your proportions and determine which areas you want to accentuate and which ones you prefer to downplay. Are you blessed with hourglass curves, or do you have a more rectangular shape? Perhaps you have a pear-shaped figure or an inverted triangle silhouette. By knowing your body shape, you can make informed decisions when it comes to selecting clothing that enhances your best assets and minimizes any areas you're less fond of.
For example, if you have an hourglass figure, opt for waist-cinching dresses and tailored tops to highlight your narrow waist. If you have a rectangular shape, experiment with empire-waist dresses or peplum tops to create the illusion of curves.
But back to skinny jeans. I do keep one or two pairs of skinny jeans on hand as they look fantastic tucked inside of knee-high boots. And that is one of my go-to style formulas come fall. But skinny jeans with a pair of loafers or ankle boots will instantly date your outfit and send you straight to the frump zone.

By incorporating trendy pieces into your wardrobe, you not only demonstrate a keen eye for fashion but keep your style fresh and exciting. This seamless integration of the latest fashion trends will set the stage for the next section, where we dive into the importance of proper fit and proportions in creating a polished and put-together look.
When your clothes fit well, you instantly exude confidence and sophistication.
One of the most common mistakes women make at a certain age is wearing clothes that are too big. Our bodies change as we age, but I say we have to embrace it. While it may seem like a good idea to hide any imperfections, baggy clothes will only make you look larger and sloppier than you actually are. Oversized clothes that hang from your frame and cover your shape will add unnecessary bulk to your outfit and throw off your proportions.
Instead, opt for clothes that fit you just right. Clothes that fit well will flatter your physique and enhance your natural curves. They will give you a clean, polished look without sacrificing comfort or flexibility. Invest in pieces tailored to your body type and accentuate your best features. You can also experiment with belts and accessories to highlight your waistline and add some structure to your outfit.
Consider trying wide-leg trousers for a more polished and sophisticated appearance. These flowing, wide-cut bottoms can create a balanced and elegant silhouette, especially when paired with a fitted top. If you typically wear oversized sweaters or baggy t-shirts, try a fitted blouse or a cropped top to show off your waistline.

When it comes to accessorizing, the options are endless. You can choose from jewelry, belts, scarves, hats, bags, and more. However, it's important to choose accessories that complement your outfit and don't overpower it. For example, if you wear a bold statement necklace, you may want to keep your earrings simple.
An easy way to take your outfit from frumpy to fabulous is with layered necklaces, whether dainty or bold, they add a touch of sophistication and can make a statement without being too overwhelming. The key is to balance the length and style of each necklace. Mix different textures, sizes, and metals to create a unique, personalized look. Layered necklaces are versatile and can be worn with any outfit, from a simple t-shirt to a formal dress. Don't be afraid to experiment and find the perfect combination to enhance your style.
While it's essential to choose the right clothes that flatter your body type and fit well, your posture plays a crucial role in how you present yourself. Slouching or standing with your shoulders hunched forward can make you look unconfident and less attractive. And let’s face it, most of us spend hours hunched over our phone or computer, leading to slouching. On the other hand, standing tall with your shoulders back and head held high can instantly make you look more attractive and confident. So, we need to practice good posture habits and stand up straight.
Ignoring your posture can also affect which features of your body are highlighted. Good posture can accentuate your curves, make you look taller, and help you appear more confident. By standing up straight and proud of your body, you'll exude confidence and look more put-together. In contrast, slouching can make you look shorter and wider and hide your features.

No outfit is complete without the right shoes, but we often underestimate their impact on our overall look. Wearing the wrong shoes can make you uncomfortable and make your outfit appear frumpy and unflattering. And I get it; as we age, we start to have foot issues like plantar fasciitis, bunions, osteoarthritis, or hammer toes. But if you can still wear most shoes or boots, pay attention to your footwear, as they can make or break your outfit.
Another mistake to avoid is wearing shoes that don't match the formality of your outfit. For example, sneakers are great for a casual day out, and I always bring a pair when I travel. Not only are they comfortable to wear on a walk but they come in handy when making a coffee run. But they don't pair well with a formal dress or suit.

On the other hand, high heels are definitely not appropriate for a day at the park or running errands. But will instantly elevate your outfit. I love wearing them with jeans, a blazer, or a simple dress. And you don’t have to wear three-inch stilettos. Opt for two-inch heels, kitten heels, or even wedges. Recently, I attended the LTK conference in Dallas. I wore a pair of Christian Louboutins that were only two inches for the final event, which was a big shindig. But look how well they go with my dress. This pair of simple black pumps instantly elevated my outfit and kept me out of the frump zone.
The same goes for boots. Pay attention to your outfit and what it dictates you should wear. Riding boots look fantastic with jeans but not necessarily with a skirt and sweater ensemble that should be paired with a sleeker boot.

Beth, I agree with most of your comments but I’m sticking with skinny jeans. For those of us who have slim, shapely legs and are on the shorter side, skinny jeans elongate our look, look great with both ballet flats and loafers and can easily be balanced with a variety of tops. Mid-rise is out as far as I’m concerned–they tend to slip and offer no real fashion plus. Wide legs just don’t work for me.
If skinny jeans are your best silhouette then go for it! Unfortunately, it isn’t the best option for the majority of women.
Thank you for saying you can still wear skinny jeans with tall boots and look fashionable. I have started wearing straight leg jeans this past year also. Tell me what the best silhouette is for
5’3″ pear shaped woman? Can you show some ideas with this silhouette? I know brown is big this season, but can you show tips with another color? I don’t wear a lot of brown. Thanks
It’s never my intention to tell women what they can and cannot wear. My hope is to share style tips and style inspiration you can easily incorporate into your life.
No need to sound defensive. She only asked if you would show denim options for women with a pear-shaped body. As someone who also is challenged with a pear shape, I would appreciate those ideas, too.
Yes, Laura, and I mentioned that was a great suggestion and I would try to address that in a future blog post. Look below. Not sure how that sounded defensive, but one never knows how the written word can be interpreted.
At 4′ 11” and 93 lbs skinny jeans are my friend. I have tried all the new styles and cannot find one that looks remotely good (even the sales clerk says go skinny or very slim straight). I am 74 years old and do not wear high heels but appreciate a good knee-high boot so slim is my go-to!
Then stick with what works! But I hope you have caught Kelly’s posts (she’s 5′) where she experiments with different pant silhouetttes.
What I meant with my last message and questions, was can you give me some tips for outfits for a 5″3 pear shaped body? I asked for other color on this outfits than brown since, I don’t wear much brown. Never meant to imply you tell us what to wear, just want some other options with straight leg jeans and pants. thanks.
Thank you! I will take your suggestion and hopefully get a new blog post up that addresses your questions.
I have always admired your lovely posture, Beth. It adds elegance and grace to any outfit.
Sometimes, we forget the simple things can make the biggest impact. Thanks for stopping by!
HI Beth!
Yes, the jeans silhouette is a raging controversy among all of us these days. In my view, there is a difference between skinny jeans which fit more like leggings and slim jeans which closely skim the body. My personal choice is a slim straight cut that works well with a variety of footwear and always looks polished. I love wide leg pants, but in jeans, the extra fabric that makes noise and flaps around your legs when you walk is very unflattering and actually feels frumpy. The exception (IMO) is a flared leg that is fitted through the hips and thigh and worn with a heel. There’s something for everyone out there!
You are so right, Janet! It’s good to know there are so many silhouettes to choose from these days!
I was very surprised to try on a pair of wide leg jeans this spring and LOVED them! I’m 5’4” and short-waisted so did not expect to like this look. It pays to try on a new look…you may be sold on a new look.
You never know what will suit you until you try it on! It’s so important to keep an open mind just like you!
