As I’ve grown older and even buy luxury items from time to time (I do think they’re a worthwhile investment), but one principle remains clear: style isn’t about money.
If you look around, examples are everywhere with women who have a lot of money but look like a disaster and women who don’t have a lot of money yet know how to put an outfit together. What truly matters is the ability to choose wisely, having a discerning eye, and understanding oneself thoroughly.
At the end of the day, it’s not just about spending money; it’s about investing time wisely, honing your personal style, staying attuned to trends, and finding ways to enhance ourselves even on a tight budget.
Now, let’s talk about color. One of the easiest ways to elevate your look is to stick with a neutral color palette. Think whites, blacks, beiges, and grays. These shades are timeless and instantly add a touch of sophistication to any outfit. Solid color garments are the most versatile, the ones you use the most and the ones that are much more unlikely to go out of style.
That’s why choosing solids over fabrics with prints and appliqués is always a winner for creating a time- and credit card-proof wardrobe. And I’m not telling you that you can’t choose a fun print or bright color - I love both and the Italians would agree with me - but even lovers of wild patterns and bold colors will benefit from the ability to “frame” their most detail-rich garments with solid-color pieces, making them stand out even more.
So, when it comes to putting together a wardrobe that looks expensive on a budget, neutral colors win the day.
Next up is fit! No matter how much you spend on your clothes, if they don’t fit well, they won’t look expensive. I recommend investing in tailoring. Even budget-friendly clothes can look high-end if they fit you perfectly. The way a garment wears, is arguably the most crucial aspect for a chic look, even more so than the quality of fabrics and materials or the finishing touches of the clothing. When a garment fits perfectly, it naturally appears more luxurious. So if I had to pick between fabric and fit, fit would win hands down every time.
And to dress well on a budget, prioritize brands that offer the best fit for us and, most importantly, build good relationships with a skilled seamstress.
Now, let’s discuss classic wardrobe staples. Investing in timeless pieces—like a well-fitted blazer, a little black dress, or tailored trousers—can really elevate your style. Listen, I find myself captivated by the allure of “new arrivals” in stores, the latest trends, and whimsical fashion choices. But when we’re discussing looking expensive on a budget it’s crucial to contemplate how to wisely allocate your budget and prioritize establishing the “foundation” of your wardrobe.
And, yes, this list may vary based on your style but don’t forget to include essentials like a perfect pair of jeans, 2-3 high-quality T-shirts in basic colors, a cozy wool or cashmere sweater in a neutral shade, a well-made coat, a stylish handbag, and so on.
Next, let’s talk about accessories! This is a key component to any outfit as accessories are not the icing on the cake but they can make or break your outfit which is why I talk about accessories so often. Again, we’re talking about “looking expensive on a budget” today so opt for simple, elegant accessories like a quality watch, minimalistic jewelry, gold hoop earrings, diamond studs, pearl necklace, or a chic leather handbag. Avoid anything too flashy. Simplicity is key when you want to achieve looking expensive on a budget. Quiet luxury was a big trend last year and if you take a look at the high end brands that emphasize a luxe look you will notice that it indeed is quiet.
Speaking of luxe, let’s chat about fabrics. Look for materials that elevate your look, like cotton, linen, wool, and silk blends. These fabrics generally appear more upscale compared to synthetic materials.
Now, this one's super important: taking care of your clothes! It seems like a no-brainer but maintaining your clothes is just as important as shopping for your clothes. Ensure you’re washing, ironing, and storing your garments correctly.
For a polished look, go for minimal, natural makeup. Quality products can enhance your features without being overpowering.
Pro tip: shop smarter! Look for sales, and clearance racks, and consider thrifting. You’d be surprised at the treasures you can find.
Last but absolutely not least: confidence! How you carry yourself can significantly impact how others perceive your style. It honestly doesn’t matter if other people like your outfit or think you should have chosen different shoes, handbag, etc… Wouldn’t it be boring if we all chose the same accessories or wore the same outfit? I always say women are a variety pack not cookie cutters. What matters is that YOU LOVE your outfit and feel confident walking out the door. Because people will notice confidence. And that’s what counts.
Now for the fun part! I recently partnered with Walmart on Instagram and chose these items from the Scoop line run by luxury designer Brandon Maxwell. And if you’ve followed me for any length of time you’ve heard me sing the praises of Brandon as he believes that style shouldn’t be limited to your budget which is why he heads the Scoop Line on Walmart that has become a favorite of mine.
Years ago, Walmart was never really a big destination for fashion, but as Amazon moved in to dominate the space, Walmart partnered with new brands like Scoop, and Sophia Vergara, and they recently added Jessica Simpson, revamping its shopping experience, and leaning into trends to create something that attracts fashion-lovers. My favorites are Free Assembly, Sophia Vergara, and hands down the Scoop line!
Ultimately, the Scoop Walmart line is a great value. But, at budget prices, you can't expect the same fit and fabric quality you'd find at more expensive retailers. But overall they do a pretty good job. I will warn you that Scoop sells like hotcakes and some of the styles I’m sharing today may be sold out even though I just ordered them and they just arrived on my doorstep.

Fantastic topic! I shop with a plan every season. I review what I have, and add or subtract items from my wardrobe. Having a plan has helped me because I never have to use a credit card. I just took everything out of my closet and set it up for fall. Several of my Ralph Lauren sweaters are over 15 years old, but look like new. I can’t wait to wear them. I just had a wonderful shopping day out with my 2 tween granddaughters. They wear uniforms to school so that is easy. I am trying to teach them about wardrobe planning, and it is such fun. My daughter already has them using organic skin care.
It makes shopping a breeze when you have a plan in place! What fun to shop with your granddaughters!
