Happy Monday, ladies! The weather finally turned around here in Athens. After a week of rain, we had an absolutely beautiful weekend. To be fair, I missed the rain, because I was in Mexico last week. So, I can’t complain too much. But even if it is dreary where you are, today’s outfit will bring a little light and bright to your day. We’re stepping into Spring today with some beautiful colors with an Ann Taylor sheath dress and tweed outfit.
Also, we’ve got a new entry into our real vs. steal series. Today: Prada sunglasses.
Today’s outfit couldn’t be simpler: I’ve paired a yellow Ann Taylor tweed jacket with a matching sheath dress. I love simple elegance and class, and
Confession: as of a few days ago, both jacket and dress were in stock. As of today, they’re sold out. But when life doesn’t give you a lemon dress… you pivot. I’ve pulled together some yummy Ann Taylor jackets that look fantastic with similar dresses. You can find the jackets here, here, and here. And similar sheath dresses here, here, and here.
If you absolutely love this jacket and dress, make sure to bookmark the page. Ann Taylor has been restocking periodically.

Tweed jackets are in this year. Honestly, they’re in every year—a true timeless classic. Pair them with a dress, slacks, or jeans. You really can’t go wrong. I went matchy-matchy today. But a colorful jacket like this one would pop with a neutral base: just imagine a black or white sheath dress. Elegant.

2022 is the year of bright and bold colors, and this yellow is topping a lot of lists. If you’re looking for alternative ways to wear it, make sure to head over to our 5 colors in for Spring post. I pulled tons of color combinations together to help you plan your wardrobe.

Happy Monday, ladies! I hope you and a wonderful and restful weekend. I was lucky to have my middle kiddo come up to Athens for the weekend. We had a wonderful time and even went bowling—first time since before the pandemic. March is completely underway—really hard to believe—and we’re heading into the week in style. I’ve got a leather moto jacket for women from Scoop available at Walmart. It checks all the boxes:
Over the past few months, many of you have written in, asking us to feature more budget-friendly outfits. Since you asked, we’re working hard to deliver. Moving forward, we’ll be integrating some great outfit ideas from retailers like Walmart, LOFT, and J.Crew Factory amongst others.
I’m loving bright colors this spring, and this faux-leather moto jacket Scoop available at Walmart in fiery red delivers. I layered it on top of a white button-down blouse by Halogen from Nordstrom. For my bottom, I went pretty matchy-matchy and chose a coral red skirt (also from Scoop). But what I like most about this jacket, is that it would be wonderful with a pair of straight-leg jeans.
Style tip: Want to hide your tummy? Choose a top with draping or ruching. Or an asymmetrical or wrap blouse is also very effective

Coral red is an in-color this spring, and I’m loving it. For those of us that generally prefer neutrals, jackets are a really easy way to incorporate color into your wardrobe, if only because you can take them off.

Also, one final bit of housekeeping: we get a lot of questions about our native advertising over here on the blog. We’re currently in the process of building out a monthly/yearly ad-free subscription model. We’re still working out the details, but soon you’ll be able to become a SAACA member and view our content ad-free. Stay tuned.
We started our budget-friendly series last week with

Hello, Spring! It’s been a while since we last saw you. And what’s a better way to celebrate you than talk about the most important winter-to-spring transition piece: Spring jackets 2022 edition. It doesn’t matter if you bring along those April showers ‘cuz we love May flowers. And we also love milder temps, blue skies, longer days, and sunshine. Then there are all those Spring celebrations you generously host:
So, yes, it’s more than okay if we have to battle crazy weather in the short term. No problemo! Especially when you have Spring jackets on hand. Come on in Spring and enjoy your stay.
It’s Sunday, ladies, which means it’s time for one of our epic roundups taken from the archives. Today, we’re talking about essential Spring jackets that help transition the season in style. My tried-and-true Classic Spring jackets are:
You know the name of the game: for each jacket type, I’ve put together a widget you can shop directly. Today’s retailers include:
Per usual, denim makes my list. Look for dark rinse, light rinse, oversized or fitted. For summer, add a denim vest for variety. Honestly, a traditional denim jacket is the perfect third layer all through Spring and Fall. Jean jackets also come in other colors and patterns.
Style tip. Wear your jean jacket with a graphic tee or white denim and roll the sleeves for a casual look.
Of course, an iconic trenchcoat makes my 2022 spring jackets. It’s an iconic statement piece. The classic khaki trenchcoat hails all the way back to WWI. Trenchcoats receive lots of love and updates from fashion designers every year. An easy way to update your closet and stay modern and relevant is with a fresh spin on the traditional trenchcoat.
Style tip. A classic way to wear a trench is unbuttoned with the belt cinched at the waist. Or tie the belt in the back for variety. Who doesn’t like choices?
This little baby is a hard-working transition piece in those early days of spring or fall when the weather can be unpredictable. Wear it with a feminine skirt. Opposites always attract. It’s the yin and yang of fashion.
Style tip. A long-sleeve stripe tee looks fabulous with a utility jacket, as do graphic tees. Don’t forget to add a colorful scarf if the weather is chilly.
A moto/biker/leather jacket works just like a blazer but with an edge. Y’all know I love a good moto jacket, which is why it always lands on my Spring jackets list. Or Fall, for that matter. It’s an iconic classic that helps span the seasons.
Style tip. Drape it over a dress for the evening or wear it with your favorite pair of blue jeans in the daytime.
Rain, rain go away. The classic raincoat, ’cause sometimes in Athens it just rains for a week straight.
Style tip. Get colorful and have fun!
One reason I always reach for a lightweight jacket is that they add warmth without the bulk. Nowadays, a lightweight down jacket can easily slip into your tote or handbag when not in use.
Style tip. Lightweight jackets are the perfect choice when traveling, especially by air. They’
Who remembers windbreakers? As a young girl and teenager, this was my jacket of choice. Even as an adult, I’ve had an affinity for windbreakers that slip over your head with kangaroo pockets.
Years ago, I had an orange windbreaker from Talbots that I wore non-stop. Mr. Style finally intervened and asked if I had any other jackets I could possibly wear…
Style tip: Much like raincoats, have fun with this jacket. They’re an easy way, low-stakes way to incorporate color into your wardrobe.
Some of you may be scratching your heads wondering why a blazer made my Spring jackets list. But blazers are the perfect third layer on a mild Spring day. A tailored blazer will always bring spit and polish to any outfit. But a deconstructed blazer has a looser fit and feels like you’re wearing an oversized sweater.
Style tip. If you’re a prepster like me, nothing beats a blazer and jeans.
Last week was easy on the wallet week as they say. We welcomed in Spring with
both from Scoop at Walmart.

Hey, gang! Today we’re continuing with our Spring Preview series with a focus on Spring colors 2022. Simply stated, Spring colors this year are bright and arguably bolder than recent years. “Very Peri”—the new shade of periwinkle—took Pantone’s 2022 color of the year. But bright yellows, orangey-reds, and blues are on-trend. Stylecaster has colors like
as in-for-Spring. If you poke around other fashion magazines and websites you’ll see similar palettes.
Today’s post is super simple: I’ve rounded up 5 bright colors I’m loving this year and dug into the archives to show you different ways to style each color. Those (general) colors are:
Anyone who follows me regularly knows I love neutrals. But I have and will continue to embrace color any chance I get. No doubt “bright and bold” can sometimes be difficult to incorporate into our wardrobe. But remember, there are a lot of ways to introduce color pops into your classic wardrobe. If you’re not a fan of colorful tops or bottoms, try a handbag or scarf. If you’re on the fence about “yellow”, try pairing yellow shoes with a pair of black or white pants.
Have fun this Spring looking for new and interesting ways to introduce color into your closet. And as silly as it sounds, remember: a little color goes a lot further than we might think in a world that often seems dark.
For each featured color, I’ve rounded up 12 new arrivals I’m loving from 3 retailers:
I’m really enjoying each’s Spring collection. You can shop my picks by clicking on the widgets at the end of each section. You’ll see many of my picks in the upcoming weeks.
Our Spring preview series is in full swing. In case you’ve missed any of our posts, make sure to check out

Of course, it’s important to stay on top of Spring fashion color trends. Some colors like Soft Lilac and Sky Blue are in; others are out. And that’s the thing about fashion trends, really. In and out, out and in. But colors that never go out of style, no matter the trends: neutrals. Yup, I’m talking blacks, whites, and grays. Ok, I know what you’re thinking: we’re just heading out of Winter and into Spring. Why are you featuring a neutral-based outfit? Simple: I’ve got a neutral tweed jacket today that’s anything but boring. And it’s a perfect transition piece as we leave February behind us and enter into the springtime months. Without further ado, here’s that tweed jacket styled two different ways.
Today I’ve got one tweed jacket (on sale!) styled two ways—both keeping with our neutral theme. The first jacket is layered with a black merino sweater from Banana Republic, paired with tuxedo pants from Ralph Lauren. A perfect monochromatic combo that you can wear just about anywhere, really. And, of course, accessories can provide the perfect but subtle counterbalance with a metallic pop. I’ve found this similar, layered necklace (similar) that will set off any similar outfit.

Tuxedo Pants | Merino Sweater | Tweed Jacket | Pumps (similar) | Necklace (similar) | Handbag
Denim | Tee | Tweed Jacket | Sandals (similar) |Handbag (similar) | Pearl Necklace (similar) | Station Necklace (similar)
The second look is the yin to the first’s yang. I’ve swapped the tuxedo pants for white denim and the sweater for a tee. Again, accessories and shoes take the outfit over the top. I love metallic sandals this year—or any year for that matter because they act as a neutral.

Hey ladies! Happy Monday. We’re wrapping January and heading straight into February—2022 is moving fast. Did anyone else catch a wild NLF playoff weekend? Hard to believe the Bengals are going to the Super Bowl! Crazy times. Anyway, we’re kicking the month off right with a fun week over here on the blog: it’s Yellowstone week. Anyone else loving this show as much as I am? I finally caught up over the past few weeks, and I can’t wait for season 5. And the fashion? Yes, please. So much so that I’ve put together a full week of Yellowstone-inspired outfits. I’m gonna show you how to dress like Yellowstone characters.
It’s winter, so putting together a Yellowstone-inspired outfit is going to center primarily around jackets and hats. Today’s outfit really just is a timeless classic and features a faux suede sherpa-lined jacket from Ralph Lauren (similar and similar 2). I absolutely love sherpa-lined anything—perfect for those cold winter days. Going with faux suede is easy on the budget, and there are a lot of good options out there. The jacket is complemented perfectly by a wool fedora. This one comes in multiple colors, so if you’re in luck if you’re looking for something other than tan.
Faux suede sherpa jacket (similar) | similar 2 | cable-knit sweater (Vince) | similar | similar 2 | denim (Ann Taylor) | boots (Banana Republic) | wool fedora| handbag (Patricia Nash)
Absolutely loving this cable-knit sweater from Vince (but check out this similar and similar 2 at different price points). It’s warm and cozy—everything I’m looking for in a winter sweater. It’s the perfect foundation for this outfit. I went with cream, but any color would pair perfectly with the tan jacket.
Faux suede sherpa jacket (similar ) | similar 2 | cable-knit sweater (Vince) | similar | similar 2 | denim (Ann Taylor) | boots (Banana Republic) | wool fedora | handbag (Patricia Nash)
The backbone of this outfit truly is these boot-cut jeans from Ann Taylor paired with the suede boots from Banana Republic. Hard to really capture that ranch aesthetic with any other type of denim but wide-legged. The boots come in three different colors, including black. I’d love to see this outfit redone in black, honestly. Less Beth Dutton, more Rip.

it’s all about new beginnings this month. as we enter a new year and a new decade, it’s the perfect time to re-examine our lives and adjust accordingly. everything from a closet cleanse to a new workout and diet regimen, to reconnecting with family and friends. changes like these help us reframe our lives so that we can be our best selves. so far this year, i’ve shared glimpses of my life through my home. we’ve seen my closet, home office, and living room. ultimately, my goal is to continue to bring you inspiration to renew and refresh your life and home. after all, our best (fashion) selves are healthy, well, and whole.
life events bring about the necessity for change: a new job, hometown, marriage, or the passing of a loved one…whatever the circumstance. it’s how we respond to them that matters most. finding the positives, being kind to others and ourselves, and embracing the changes ahead—these are the tools we can use to forge ahead into the future happy and healthy.

my outfit today channels my inner sailor! i love the classic look of a chunky cable knit sweater (last seen here and here). i have paired the sweater with wide-leg jeans from Banana Republic (last seen here). to complete the look i topped it off with a J. Crew pea coat (last seen here). my newly purchased Boss Bag from Everlane is roomy and chic. add aviators (these are Tory Burch) and you’re ready to set sail!

as my regulars know, one of the more important aspects of my life is to continue my health and wellness journey. you all know i am a big fan of FASTer Way to Fat Loss. and while reaching my optimum weight for my body type is a goal, it’s not the goal. it’s always about lifestyle changes. making good food choices is crucial. exercise programs that are beneficial and fun keep me motivated. taking time each day to sit quietly and breathe helps me center myself when days can be stressful.
i am not perfect. and i don’t expect to be. but i give myself the grace to not be perfect. new new beginnings are always possible, even when we stumble and fall. the incremental successes are wonderful to see and feel; it’s what keeps me motivated.

it’s wednesday, gang, time to go put a smile on someone’s face, including yours.
it will comes as no surprise that preppy is my go-to style. it always as been, and it always will be. preppy lends itself naturally to the spring and summer months. but how do we keep that aesthetic alive and fresh when we’re in the cold, dreary depths of winter? if you’re looking for some essential items to prep up your wardrobe—or if you’re looking for a little color to offset the gray days—today’s post is for you. i’m going to give you some outfit essentials that will show you exactly how to keep the torch burning strong—how to dress preppy in the winter.
yesterday on the blog, i was feeling neutral: it was all about the whites, grays, and blacks. (and for those of you that are wondering, Ann Taylor restocked the herringbone shawl collar wrap coat that’s all the rage. so if you were looking to pick one up and missed out, make sure to head over and grab one.)
today, it’s all about the color pop. we’re no strangers to color over here on the blog, and we talked extensively last fall on how to introduce color into your wardrobe. preppy is all about well-placed color additions, and the outfit of the day features a blue monochromatic base. some people shy away from monochrome, as it can sometimes feel redundant and/or aesthetically uninteresting. however, monochrome is an easy way to introduce color to your wardrobe, and a simple way to successfully do it is by picking a base—shirt/pant, sweater/shirt—combination that runs the two ends of a particular shade spectrum.
here, i’ve chosen a dark blue gingham shirt and layered it with a light blue sweater from J.Crew. i’ve added visual interest to the outfit by pairing my base with a pair of houndstooth jeans that pick up both colors.
similar puffer jacket | gingham shirt | sweater | houndstooth jeans | similar hobo bag | loafers | similar scarf | sunglasses
i’m fortunate that Athens weather often permits me loafers during the winter. if you too live in an equally forgiving climate, a pair of penny loafers is an obvious but timeless way of prepping up an outfit. i picked this pair up from J.Crew, but if you’re looking for alternatives, check out these Oxford loafers i featured last week on the blog. but if it’s Minneapolis-like weather where you are, make sure to check out this Easy Spirit winter shoe guide I put together a few weeks ago. there are a couple of booties that would go perfectly with today’s outfit!
similar puffer jacket | gingham shirt | sweater | houndstooth jeans | similar hobo bag | loafers | similar scarf | sunglasses
a puffer jacket is one of my top 5 essential winter jackets to own. not only is it quintessentially preppy, but it’s just so darn versatile. if you’re headed to work, out and about shopping, or meeting a friend, reach for your puffer. it’ll keep you warm, and you’ll look good while it’s doing it. this one is older but i’ve found a similar one at Nordstrom—totally reasonably priced—but head to your favorite retailer for yours.

the leaves are turning, the weather is getting colder, and we’re headed straight into Thanksgiving. the transition is upon us from fall to winter, and this week i’m bringing you my first real series of warmer outfits. today: cashmere from head-to-toe. after all, what is more luxurious than cashmere?
last week, my family brought you a series of holiday memories: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. keeping with that theme, join us all this week for holiday decorating ideas. kelly and i are bringing you kitchen and dining room holiday-themed tablescapes. you’re not going to want to miss them. i even put together a gift guide for you for each holiday: Thanksgiving through New Year’s.
it’s going to be a fun, light, and family-filled week over here on Style at a Certain Age. we know how hectic this season can be, but we’re looking forward to taking a break between the madness with you, even if it’s just for a little while.
it’s been all about J.Crew for me this fall and winter. (head over to their website for early Cyber Monday deals.) today, i’m sporting a matching camel cashmere sweater layered with a cashmere sweater-blazer. an easy way to break up this chromatic pairing is with a color pop. i’ve chosen to do so with this silk scarf from Talbots. i’ve been loving the silk scarves this year. and if you’re looking for some more ideas, this one from Talbots is one of our best sellers.
cashmere sweater-blazer | cashmere sweater | wide-leg pant | toby flat | scarf | tote bag
i’ve chosen to pair the cashmere sweater and cashmere sweater-blazer with this wide-leg pant from J.Crew. i’ve featured the wide-leg pant several times this year, including coupling it with a blazer. today, i’ve gone with a slight variation: cropped wide-legs.
i’m featuring them with these fun toby flats from Nordstrom because this look is on-trend this fall and winter. however, cropped wide-legs plus flats can tend to make one look shorter. stay tuned for tomorrow’s post, where i’ll take the same pant and pair it with heels. then you’ll really get a sense of how versatile these pants are.

it got cold in Athens last week. how’s the weather been where you are? are you going to get snow for Thanksgiving this year? all i know is this: it’s time to start bundling: cashmere head-to-toe.

all this week, we’ll be featuring holiday tablescapes over here on the blog. we’re starting with Thanksgiving. first up is a more casual, kitchen tablescape. i’m loving the retro vibe the green placemats contrasted with the laid napkins give.
and now for something a little more formal. this is our take on a Thanksgiving dining room tablescape.
below, i’ve put together some fun Thanksgiving decorating and gift ideas for you.
we’ve put together several gift guides for you this fall. in case you missed them, we’ve compiled them here:
