One topic that was ripe for discussion on my Mediterranean Cruise was travel. Since the average age of travelers aboard the Windstar Surf was 60-something, I thought it would be fun to put a post together about the Top Travel Destinations for Seniors. Yep, technically, I am a Senior. How did that happen?! The age bracket for “seniors” can vary depending on context and culture, but it typically refers to individuals aged 65 and older. However, some organizations and studies might classify those aged 55 or 60 and older as seniors, especially when discussing topics like retirement, healthcare, and senior discounts.ย
No matter when Seniors start or stop, the desire to explore new places and cultures often remains a strong motivation as we age. The world has much to offer, whether it’s soaking in stunning landscapes, experiencing vibrant cities, or relaxing on beautiful beaches. Here’s a curated list of some of the best travel destinations that cater specifically to the needs and interests of seniors, ensuring a comfortable and enriching travel experience.

Top Travel Destinations for Seniors: Explore the World at Your Own Pace
Alaska, USA
Alaska Cruises were a popular topic aboard the Windsurf. Many people had already been on one and raved about it. Others were in the planning stages. This is one destination on my bucket list. And I want to visit Alaska via cruise because you hug the shore the entire time and have a birdseye view of its beauty. I will have Kelly chime in about this great state, as she lived there once upon a time.
Hello, everyone! Kelly here…I always recommend folks take a one-way cruise up to Seward, Alaska, and then take the Alaska Railroad up to Anchorage. Explore Anchorage for a few days and then continue up to Denali on a round-trip luxury train ride on the Alaska Railroad, flying home from Anchorage. You can find pre-and post-cruise rail tour itineraries here: Pre and Post-Cruise Alaska Rail Tours
This itinerary is the best way to see all of Alaska’s majesty and awe-inspiring vistas.
Why Visit: Known for its breathtaking natural beauty, Alaska offers seniors an opportunity to immerse themselves in stunning landscapes, wildlife viewing, and serene cruises through glaciers.

Amalfi Coast, Italy
There are thirteen towns that make up the Amalfi Coast with Positano being one of them. And I have to admit it was a charming city. There was a lovely bar at the top of the town with a breathtaking view that I could have spent the entire afternoon sipping an Aperol Spritz and people watching.

In Case You Missed It
Yesterday, Beth shared Evening Attire for a Mediterranean Cruise. Click the title or image below to read the article.
Beth, so happy for you that you made this trip. We had a private email a while ago and you told me it would take a while to think “me” instead of “we”. You have been an inspiration to so many of us. I just returned from a solo driving trip to a favorite place that my husband and I started going to over 30 years. We had already made our reservations before his sudden passing. It is a beautiful Inn and spa located in a gorgeous area of my state. Next June, I will be taking a girls’ trip to Paris with my daughter and granddaughters. My daughter refers to it as girl power.
Dear Beth,
I am delighted to hear that you enjoyed your mediterrenean cruise. Dubrovnik is truly a beautiful city,
but I think you were lucky to visit it in October. During the summer months it is one of the most overcrowded places in Europe, and probably not very enjoyable for senior travellers.
Thank you for recommending Alaska, I will put it on my list of places to see.
Many greetings from Germany, Martina Frick
I can vouch for Barcelona! My son and his wife and my 2 grands live in Alcala de Henares in Madrid but we visited Barcelona (before kids). Spain is so lovely. I hope to hit Paris the next time I visit. As a 67 y/o widow, traveling occupies a lot of my wishful thinking; just need to get up the nerve to go solo. Cruising was “our” favorite and I think I am ready to try it alone. I’m loving your series about this cruise.
