We’ve all been there, standing in our closet, sipping our coffee with the clock ticking. You have to be out the door in 20 minutes! Your eyes blankly stare at all of your clothes hanging on the hangars. That’s when that all too familiar feeling sinks in and you think for the millionth time “I’ve got nothing to wear” Zero. Zilch. Nada. Hello, Fall Style Formula!
But what is an outfit formula? Simply put an outfit or style formula consists of those go-to pieces in your closet that you can mix and match to create endless outfits.
Just think of it as a math equation. It can consist of several items like Jeans + a T-Shirt + Sweater + Blazer or fewer items like a Dress + Blazer.
So let’s take a look at a few style formulas to get your creative juices flowing because it’s definitely possible to look stylish even as the seasons are changing.

Personally, I love how white brightens any day. But the best part is white is a neutral that goes with everything. Black, grey, and camel are my favorite neutrals to pair with white. There’s something so chic and simple about any of those color combinations. But I think my favorite is camel and white.
This style formula starts with neutrals:
White Denim + Camel Turtleneck + Camel Coatigan + Leopard Pumps + Leopard Belt
White denim for winter is a perfect way to start your day. Add a sleek camel turtleneck and camel coatigan for a sophisticated look that’s still very casual.
One of my favorite style formulas starts with:
Chunky Turtleneck + Slim Pants + Loafers
It’s a casual outfit made in heaven thanks to an oversized turtleneck with a relaxed silhouette that’s comfortable yet sophisticated. It looks fantastic with any pair of pants or jeans you throw its way. Since it’s fall, a chunky turtleneck might be all you need for just the right amount of warmth. And because it’s still a little warm here, loafer mules are a great shoe option. But this formula will work with loafers and booties, if the temps are chilly.

Basics are essential to creating versatility in your wardrobe. Most of us have black pants on hand. It may sound counterintuitive but basics are anything but boring. As a matter of fact, they can create a simple outfit that lets a statement piece take center stage.
The next style equation starts with:
Black Base + Statement Piece
Again, having your closet stocked with closet staples in neutral colors will make putting together an outfit as easy as 1,2,3. Bright, bold colors are on trend again this fall. But which ones? Well, red is definitely at the top of the list, but so is pink (my favorite color), in bright and bold shades that will definitely turn a few heads. But this is an easy way infuse your outfit with a modern, sophisticated look.
Vegan Leather High Rise Slim Jean | Cashmere Classic Fit Crewneck Sweater | The Benning Chelsea Boot | Golden Flower Hoop Earrings | Golden Flower Bangle | Buckle Strap Rectangular Bag
You can have fun with this Black Base + Statement Piece formula. The red coat outfit is from years ago, but the formula can work perfectly well for fall 2023, we’re just adding that statement piece as our third layer – think a blazer or lady jacket.
This style equation starts with the iconic: Breton Top. And to show you how versatile this top is I have three looks that show just a few of the many ways this iconic striped top can be styled.
Look 1 is a more dressed-up look, with navy trousers and blazer, with the Breton Top as the statement piece.
Look 2 is a great casual way to style the Breton Stripe Top. An oversized cardigan adds just the right amount of fall warmth and style.
Look 3 is a recent look with items from Talbots. I love to mix other patterns with stripes, and the Breton Top is a perfect pair with this Glen Plaid Blazer.

Thank you for this post. I need to print this or post a note in my closet as a reminder to help get thru those “Have nothing to wear” moments.
Have a great week!
Love your daily emails. You do such a great job exploring different ideas of pairing clothes together. You put a lot of thought in each of your post. Thank you!
Your fall inspirations have been great. I am struggling with way too many clothes which adds up to “nothing to wear” because I’m so overwhelmed. You’ve made it simple! Thanks!
This was very helpful! Thank you.
